1988 Samurai Transmission problem

1988 Samurai Transmission problem

I just purchased a 1988 Samurai (30,xxx miles).   The transmission was working fine until today - I've had problems shifting into 5th gear.   The shifter lever has a lot of left to right slop as if something has come lose inside the tranny.

Sounds like it could be the transmission shifter bolt, its a pretty common thing to crap out on sami's.
You can buy one from pretty much any of the samurai vendors.
Or if you have access to a lathe you can make one in about 5 min.

Hawk Suzuki sells a heavy duty replacement kit I put in a Sammy a few years back.  Took about 30 minutes to swap over, easier then cake.

I hope if the shift pin broke it fell all the way down and didn't catch a gear. I rebuilt one a few months back that had that happen. It broke the 5th gears.

Thanks for the info.
I purchased a new bolt and bushing but have another question.  I trying to remove the old bushing.   Looks like the upper part of the shifter handle is pressed on to the lower part (i.e., the part with the pivit ball - or what ever it's called).    Is the upper part threaded such that I can unscrew it?

I think I know what you are asking.... The shifter (the long tapered part) looks to be crimped on to the lower part that has the ball joint. This is all one unit. I just removed my transmission and discovered that the shifter  bolt pin was broken in half. It still operated just fine but was a disaster waiting to happen. The original plastic bushing was looking well used (175,000 miles) with a few chips missing off the upper rim.....I am still waiting for the new replacement parts to arrive. My bushing lifted out with the shifter it was stuck to the ball with grease.
