More Sammy Tranny questions
« on: February 24, 2008, 06:04:29 PM »
Well... I have opened my Samurai's transmission today and have all the gears/parts exposed. As I've been working on this in my spare time it taking me awhile to get to this point. The inside looks like it's brand new.... It's hard to believe that it's over 20 years old no signs of wear or crud. I can't seem to detect anything that is obviously wrong while spinning it by hand. It would seem that I would be able to feel and see a bearing that is bad...

Question:
For you guys who have replaced bearings in a Sammy tranny ... did you find your bearings to be obviously worn/shot?  Also what length/size gear pull did you use?

I did so want to see something really wrong,
Dennis

I have been trying to post pic's on here for a while but I guess they won't let me anymore,so here goes with words LOL,  the bearing in the front next to the input shaft seemed to be the worst, you have to be careful and make sure you have a clean area to work with when the little parts go flying LOL, I used a long jaw puller, used one of the jaws by hand first to pry on stuff then hooked it up the right way and pulled the bearings off, make sure you don't pull the sliders off the hubs or you will be looking for parts, and make sure the C clips are on good when it goes back together and I put the tail part back on with the bell housing laying flat on the table to make it go together easyer.

Thanks for the tips...
I can buy a 12" three armed puller for 20 bucks on eBay plus 10 for shipping.  I'll see what NAPA is asking for one in the A.M.

Thanks again

Look at this thread.....

http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,64532.0.html

I have a couple pics on there of what I used to pull the bearings and sleeves.  For reinstalling, I just used a hammer and some pipe that would slip over the shaft, but still be small enough diameter to line up with the inside part of the bearings (never drive on the outside of bearings to install them).

All of my bearings looked good, but if I would "twist" the bearings side to side, I had a couple that were really sloppy and they were the ones that were making the tranny howl.

Thanks Sky....
I know it's almost impossible to describe transmission noises over the Internet..... I am hoping that your "howl" noise is the same as my "rumbling" noise. A buddy is loaning me a long bearing puller today so I hope to have it back together tonight.

Just try not to lose the three little balls that go in a few places on the assembly. I had a small magnet I put them on. Also have a towel to lay stuff on, that will help. Another thing is to be careful not to let the c clips shoot off and get lost. When you have it all back together but have the top case off, try sliding the shift collars back and forth to make sure they function properly. It's easy to get them backwards like I did on my first one. I also used some lucas to lube stuff up as I reassembled. Dennis (Mrfuelish) recommended mystic gear oil and it seems to do a nice job. It's also a good idea to have a diagram. Go to suzuki info.com and download the jimny service manual and go to the transmission section. It has a good description and diagram.  Good luck.

I just discovered that the transmission rebuild kit I bought is missing the counter shaft bearing with the C-clip slot. If it ain't one thing it's another. :(

You should be able to take the number off any bearing you are missing and get it matched at a bearing dealer. That would save some time. You might  also try laying all the bearings out in order and matching them up that way. I found that I had to take a clip or two off my old bearings and put on the new bearings to make the set complete.

Thanks guys for the ideas.... On another note I noticed that the largest gear in diameter on the main shaft has a few small shallow chips on a few of the teeth. I am guessing this is nothing to sweat. right? all the other gears look perfect.

You could run it but I would look into getting at least a used one, most of the time when I pull my sammie stuff apart it looks like new And I have over 100k on it, you could take a stone of some kind to the sharp edges on the chips and that will help but for how long? I think the gear that you are talking about gets used alot except 4th gear.
