I have a '94 Tracker 1.6L 8-valve Tracker that need a crankshaft replaced. I also have a '95 1.6L 16-valve motor with 80K miles sitting on a pallet ready to be installed. I would like you comments and advice on whether to repair the 8-valve or install the 16-valve. What would be the pros and cons with this engine swap? Let me start by telling you this. I know that I will need a 16-valve ECM, wiring harness and maybe a fuel pump. Please tell me, I have read a lot of horror stories about the 8-valves having trouble with rod bearing and crankshafts going bad. Is this as commom as it sounds. Are the 16-valves more reliable? So many questions so little time.

I do not think it's going to be that much better as I understand they both have the same short block, but you're gonna feel the difference in power and response.

I had the 1.6L 16v on my 98 kick and the same happened to me twice (shaft & bearing probs). Fist time I repaired, the second time I decided to swap for a 2L (Aerio engine).

I'm in the process at the moment. I'm making a write-up on the swap but it's in spanish. As soon as I finish I'll translate to english.

I just want to say thanks to all. The information that I've received from this and other forums have helped greatly in my decision making. I am currently looking for a 16v ECM which will acccept my 3-speed automatic 4X4 transmission. if I can locate it I will change over to the 16v, if not I will repair my 8v and sell the 16v.

Just FYI, you will also need to get a replacement air box if you are running one.  The 8V and 16 V air box are different dimensions.
