Crank Trigger tooth count???
« on: March 01, 2008, 06:52:20 PM »
Hi guys,

I would like to use a programmable Fuel Management Sys on my 2.0L (J20A) engine swap. I was thinking on buying a Microtech ECU but when I contacted them in Australia, they asked me for some info on the crank trigger system of the 2.0L engine. They need to know the amount of teeth te trigger system has so they can tell me exactly what ECU I need.

Does anyone knows/has this info???

Here's what Microtech and I discussed via emails:

Hi mate
I'm going to need some detailed info on the trigger system.
It sure sounds like the trigger wheel is either a part of the flywheel or near the flywheel somewhere
I'm going to need to know how many teeth it has etc etc to be able to configure a system to suit
Check it out & see what you can come up with
Regards
Jon

    Thanks for replying back Jon

Well, the engine does run multiple coils (1/cilinder) and I do see a small wire harness going to the back of the engine and hiding behind the outer part of the crankshaft where the flywheel bolts to (i suppose that is the crank trigger - it controls the timing if the ignition, doesn't it?).

Man I hope this helps!!! Are you better off with pics of the engine???

        Hi there Jose
I am not familiar with that engine
Can you tell me what type of ignition system it has????
Does it run a distributor & single coil or multi coil & a crank sensor
Let me know & I can help you out
        Regards
        Jon

Check if there is a Camshaft Position Sensor at the rear of the cylinder head. On the 1.6 engines this has an unusual tooth spacing to determine camshaft/engine position. This is not likely to be compatible with aftermarket systems, you may have to fit a toothed wheel and sensor to the crankshaft pulley. This is what the 1.6 CPS looks like:

This picture from the FSM indicates that its not a conventional 'missing tooth' setup. The ignition trigger signal is generated by the ECU, its not a sync signal.
