Whining at shut off
« on: October 17, 2004, 01:56:06 PM »
In the last week or so, as soon as I turn off the engine, I get this loud whine kind of noise right after shut off, but dies off right away.  Doesn't even last a second...

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Blown head gasket, leaking exhaust
out of the radiator cap

Maybe your completely out of oil and it's your rings grinding into the side of the piston wall :o j/k  :P I had a bearing in my compressor go out and it would wine at very low rpm and right when the motor was shut off. It's easy to check, just pull the belt, start it and turn it back off and see if the whine in gone.

No I don't have a compressor.  I'm going to have to check it out tomorrow when I get home from work.  I sure hope it's the fan clutch.  Does oil leak from a blown head gasket?

Not usually. If it's a head gasket, it'd probably be water escaping.

I'd guess you'll find it's that clutch fan. If not, you might have someone shut it off and watch for what makes the noise. (I had a pinhole in a hose that leaked only on shutoff.  ???)

Yeah, I had a friend at work shut off my motor and it sure sounded like it was coming from the fan area.  I sprayed some WD-40 but it still makes the sound...I'm going to do some more research as soon as the friggin wet weather stops.

I would assume it's the bearing in the fan clutch. A replacement unit is about $90 locally. You can try cleaning the spring, so the clutch works properly. (It may help.)

One person put in 2 longer bolts & 2 nuts, locking it so the bearing couldn't turn. It'll take away 1 or 2 HP, but will stop the noise.
