Samurai Fender Trimming
« on: April 05, 2008, 11:41:28 PM »
Hi Guys,
How much clearance can you gain by trimming?  I plan to do a SPOA (probably the bolt on one from Rocky Road) with the stock springs and don't want to add any additional lift.  What size tires will I be able to fit?  I'd like to go bigger than 31s.  Will I need to get after market wheels with different back spacing?

I don't even own a samurai yet but plan to.

Thanks

It all depends on what you are after and what your abilities are.  One of my favorite builds is my SPOA on 35 from last year.  Stock 1.3L, 5.12 diffs, 35" Mud radials, Prelude seats, $300 Macco paint.

Each front fender is still fully enclosed with the inner fender reworked and wwelded.  I spent 8+ hrs on each.  The rear is the standard cut and fold like can be found elsewhere.  Then fiberglass and smooth to taste.

All (4) fenders were modified for the new arches to follow the top of the factory plastic flare.

Their is room for 38's and I have wheeled and mud bogged it with the 38" Swampers, But the 38's are more work to drive then they are worth.  On 38's I sat about the same height as a lifted sammy on 33's.  LOW COG is a good thing.

same truck before paint, but on 38's:

Awesome rigs!  So on the first one you cut along the outside arc of the original flares and were still able to keep the inner fender wells?
Thanks.

Thanks,

Yes that is what i did but it was not an easy task.

1. mark top of plastic flares.

2. remove flares

3. Remove flare brackets (Drill spot welds)

4. Cut along line drawn in #1

5. Cut bottom of front inner fender (behind headlight)

6.  Move entire fender (outer and inner) that were cut off below fender flare line in #1
     to new location up 3-4"

7.  Spot weld the relocated innerfender thru the original drilled out spot welds.  (This is done from under the hood on the inside)

8.  Rework lower front of fire wall back to body mount to match the new fender line.

9. finish weld / seal / paint

You can run a 32" tire with no trimming on a SPOA. You just need to lay back the edges of the body inside the fender wells and trim the ends off the tube the front turn signal/liscence plate holder is mounted too.

{SPOA} ??? def please

Spring Over Axle.  It's a method of lifting 5-6" by switching the axle from being over the spring to under the spring.  If you do a search there are a bunch of discussions on doing one yourself.
