Tansfer box / rear diff oil leak...
« on: April 06, 2008, 02:18:54 AM »
Hi guys!

My little zuki has spent all of its live on an island south of England called Guernsey, where the speed limit for the entire island is 35mph (no laughing!)

I study at University in England, so i thought i'd bring her over. Having never really drivin her more than 35mph, or for a very long period of time. I've just made a 6hour journey on motorways cruising up to 70/80mph. I'm impressed how well she went! Anyway i now have an oil leak... (barely enough to drip, but i'm worried it could get worse!)

Its on both ends of the rear drive shaft where the shaft slots into the rear diff, and out of the tranfer box. Whats wrong? I guess the seals at each end have had it? Are they're even seals there?

Am i right in thinking this is because this journey is the fastest the rear drive shaft has ever spun!?

Also, i have coil spacers installed. So i have a small gap where the rear drive shaft fits into the transfer box whereby i havent put in a drive shaft extension spacer thingy.... would this make a difference?

So there's another essay from me ( i like to explain things :P )
Cheers in advance for any feedback!
Andy :)

Here is a little pic i've just taken showing the gap between my rear drive shaft and transfer box, this seems to be where the oil is leaking at this end...

I think this gap is due to having those coil spacers installed... but without extending the shaft with an adaptor like this...

Anyway, help apprechiated guys! :)

It looks like the drive shaft is a little to far out. did you take the pic when it was jacked up or was siting on the ground, if it was siting on the ground  I think the spacer would be a good idea because when the axle drops down or the suspension cycles through it's travel it will get worse as it drops out

Yeah this was taken while is was sat normally. I kinda thought i might need a spacer. But would this fix the leak!?

What type/grade etc of oil do i need to re-fill the tranny and diff with??

Thanks,
Andy
