Hey all,

Im hoping someone could help me out here. I recently purchased a used Suzuki Samurai with the G16A motor in it. It seems the temp guage doesn't want to climb to the mid point. Heats up fine, and starts to climb but only goes about a 1/4 of the way.

I changed out the thermostat and still not helping. Any suggestions?

This should not be a problem,
if you changed the thermostat
with a stock temp one (180*)

The possible cause could be the
wrong sending unit, the G13 came
with a different sender than the G16
so the signal is not as high of a Ohm
and only puts your Sammy's guage
to the 1/4 mark

I have had it reach the mid point, but only on SUPER hot days, 28-30 degree weather. It takes forever to reach it, but it does. The heat works unbelievably well, really hot.

Were approaching the winter months here in Canada so I won't see it do that for a while. I was worried that when it got colder it wouldn't reach the 1/4 point, but it does so I think im o.k.

I guess so. As wild said though check your temp guage sending probe thing and see if its the one for the 1.6 motor.

mine also is around 1/4 almost all the time.when its (the weather) hot it goes  to 1/3.
by the way i envy you ,where i live when we are talking about realy hot its usually more the 40(C)

What temp thermostat did you use?

Mine originally had a 190+ (I think it was actually 193) degree; that was just a little under 1/2 on the gauge.

Then I put in a 160 degree; that was a little too cool and probably 1/5 on the gauge.

I have a 180 degree in there now and it sits around the 1/4 mark.

The original clutch fan would keep it at the thermostat level all of the time.  My electric fan will keep it there unless I'm sitting still for more than 15 minutes, then it'll creep up to a little over 1/2 and the fan will come on and cool it back down.  As long as it gets to the same level all of the time, you should be fine.

I think that, in general, a cooler engine will have a little more HP, but will be worse on emissions, and causes more wear & tear than a warmer engine.  I believe that most engines are designed to run best around 190-200 degrees.
