Where do you buy your U-joints?
« on: October 15, 2004, 10:03:04 AM »
I want to replace the u-joints on both driveshafts but a search of local autoparts stores doesn't come up with much.

I could only find one brand (I didn't recognize the name, something like naepco) and the ones RRO sells say they're greasable, but they don't mention the brand.

What's everyone out there using?

you could try a driveline shop,
but I think I just got what Autozone
had, or try a Napa, they usually have
better stuff.

So far, ive broken 2 in a row from autozone. Looking at the metal where it broke, it was discolored, almost like it was made of 2 different metals put together which im sure makes it weaker.. I got one from O'rielys and still and running it.

Well, I picked up some Naepco (sp?) u-joints from the local AutoZone today.  Hopefully, I'll get them installed in the next day or so AND have better luck than you have with them  :-/

Make sure after you install the ujoints you tap them with a hammer to release them from binding. If you don't they will heat up and destroy them selves. By the way the neapco brand is good and can be trusted. Stock suzuki brand, Neapco, spicer and precision u-joints are good joints.

I saw that in the shop manual and I had never heard of such a thing before.  I've replaced u-joints on two other vehicles and don't recall any "tapping" procedure called for.  Is this a Geo/Suzuki thing or a 4x4 thing?

Not really, but the cups can be tight
to one side after pressing, so you tap
the sides of the yoke to center the cups
and prevent the possible binding, it doesn't
always happen, so you might have just
got lucky.
