2001 zr2 tracker.
« on: June 25, 2008, 11:48:56 PM »
Ive had an older model Tracker and loved it, I moved to Florida and sold it before I left Kentucky, I ended up buying a 2001 ZR2 here and really like the way it looks, but how easy are they to upgrade? I would just like to beef it up some, put like 32 swampers under it, and a safari roof rack, I will be driving this back and forth to work, and to fish out of.  It has a 2.0 4cyl and gets pretty rough mpg only like 20, if that. any clues how to make it better, and what are some good sites for after market items?

Huh.  My identical truck, only an '03, got about 25mpg stock.  Maybe yours is an automatic?  20mpg still sounds silly low, though, since I'm getting 20-21 with the 2.7 and auto.

32s will take some work and expense.  29s can be done for cheap.

looks just like mine did when i bought it new..  on my last tank of gas i got rougly 440 - 450km or 280miles on a tank of gas, mainly highway driving at 100-110km\h or 60-65mph.  i run 31x9.5's on mine, i think i could have fit 32x9.5's on stock rims with minor trimming at the front of the rear wheel well and at the rear of the front wheel well.  the turning radius would have suffered even further though as the tires rub the frame already.  i have not found any roof rack that is available, whish i could..you're going to need at least 2.5inches of suspension lift and a 2inch body lift plus the trimming to fit 32's.
03-ZR2, 2dr, 31x10.5 SSR's & stuff...--sold :-(
03 xl7, jeff's 2inch spacer lift, 225/75/16's; sold

I checked it again on this tank, and got just at 21mpg.. it is a automatic, now my older one I had back home was a 5 speed, and 1.6 and im pretty sure i was getting 27mpg.. but top speed without winding the motor the max was about 65, with this one I can cruise at 75mph really easy. Im thinking im going to have to cut off the cat, and maybe a cold air intake. it could be stopped up.

Nah, thinking about it more, 21 mpg isn't that out of line with the automatic, especially if you're regularly driving 65+.  These trucks are not aerodynamically talented, so things get exponentially worse the more above 45mph you drive.  I would suggest that you not run the 25psi or whatever is recommended for the tires.  Running 38-40 vs. 25 is worth 2+ mpg, and the trade-off in ride is minimal.  Handling improves.
