samurai 1.6 conversion questions
« on: July 06, 2008, 08:59:31 PM »
I have a few questions maybe someone could help with:

Does a sidekick fuel tank fit in a samurai?

When doing a 1.6 8v efi swap into a sammy do you use a high flow inline pump or a low psi pump?

With the swap do you use the sidekick coil or the original samurai coil?

Does anyone make brackets for the sidekick radiator to fit in the samurai?  Do you think its worth the time to investigate this or should I just reuse the stock samurai radiator?  I will have an electric fan on my setup if that sways the decision.

I have the power steering conversion done as well (mostly, my front end is out waiting to do the rest of my spoa).  Once you put power steering on the samurai do you disreguard the steering stabilizer shock system?

Whats the difference between the front and rear spider/side gears?

Thanks in advance for any info you can give!

Unless you want to spend a lot of time trying to figure out why things don't work, always use the same components that go with the engine - especially electrical stuff.  That would go with the fuel pump too when using the EFI/TBI system.

I have a Samurai radiator in my 1.6 8-valve engine and it works great with the stock fan.  Besides the main advantage of not having to mess with fabbed mounts, if you use an all-metal unit (I think they are pre-1990), you can have it professionally cleaned (top and bottom unsoldered, passages rodded out then re-assembled for good-as-new operation).  Newer plastic-capped radiators suck! I have gone through one on my '93 sidekick already because the topside plastic welds failed and radiator shops will not take them apart to clean them.

I hope that this helps!

the tank will not fit and the pump is inside therfore you will need an inline high press pump, use the samurai radiator mine worked great untill i swapped to an automatic trans and needed the trans cooler, you will need the coil pack to replace your cylinder coil and your harness will need to be modded 250 bones, front and rear end third members are the same, stabilizer does not matter if you like it keep it if not lose it 8)
88' Zuk 16v efi full width dana 44 axles and 37"s,hybrid exo cage, comp cut rear -18", F&R fox air shocks , jegs poly seats, sk automatic trans, 6.5:1 t case, twinsticks, 100" wheelbase with a 79" wide.

Thanks for the feedback.  Good to know.  I have the high pressure pump on the way from TT so I am glad I didn't make a mistake there.  I am sending my harness in to Sean at aftermarket4x4 tomorrow so thats taken care of.

The reason I ask about the front and rear third members is because I have a set of double tough axles on order from TT and they say you have to swap in rear sidegears for these axles.  Which is fine because I put a spool in the rearend so I have my rear gears available.  However, I have a lockright locker that is a front or rear model and my front axle housing is already detached from the frame as I am in the middle of a spoa as well and now would be a great time to put that locker in but the axles aren't going to come until the end of the month.

So if there is no difference then why do the double tough axles require rear sidegears?
If I assemble my locker and put in the rear sidegears will the stock OEM front axles still work?  If so then I could put in my locker now to get things going and upgrade my axles at a later date.  Of course I should probably just relax and wait on the locker and do them both at the same time.  I am just itching to get this thing on the road as I bought it with a dead motor so I haven't got to drive it yet.

I forgot this one...

The spline count on the front and rear axle shafts are different.  Therefore the sidegear spline counts on the front and rear differentials are also different.
