Hard Top
« on: July 16, 2008, 06:02:29 PM »
I have a 1991 Samurai with a soft top and would like to change to a hard top. Does anyone know what years are compatible and how much do I have to change as in the windshield and tail gate.

You would have to replace the entire body.  It would be easier to just swap your drive train into the new rig.  You might be better off trying to locate a removable hard top that will just snap on.  They are rare, but can be found.

?

Maybe he does mean to put on a removable hard top... in that case all you need is the hard top and the hardware. Which isn't much, just a few latches IIRC.

Yes, I am looking for a "removable" hard top and am trying figure out how much I have to change to bolt or snap one on. The components i am concerned about are the windshield, tailgate, rollbar, and maybe doors. I do not know if the window frames are the same from a soft top to a hard top.
Derteracing, you said you know someone with a two piece fiberglass top. How can I get in contact with him?

Ah, I thought you where talking about welding on a tin top.  :)

Everything stays the same when you put a fiberglass top on.  You just need to pull off the soft top hardware and put top on.

For a new one call TT Brent carries one for $895. He may be able to get the latchs also. When I sold mine I tried to find some pics of the latchs for the guy who bought it so he could see what they looked like. Try McMaster-Carr, I believe a saw a couple there that looked close. And also try a boat supply store.

And safetyguy, it's a ten miute job to swap tops. The removable hard top only has four latchs wich you can leave when you put the soft top back on and a few rubber gaskets. One that wraps around the top of the windshield frame and tops of the body bars over the doors and two that attach to the back of the hoop that goes over your head.

If the hardtop you buy doesn't come with them, call Hawk strictly suzuki or aftermarket 4x4.
