water proofing a jeep

any one know or have a check list on how to water proof a jeep i have a 91 asunna 2 dr 5 spd and am getting it ready to get wet and have some fun but i dont want to fry anything or kill the computer i heard of a few things like silicone around plugs and stuff but if sombody can brake this down for me would be vary helpfull thanks.

Well... you can't really.  If you drive it in water expect to tear things apart a lot to keep everything working right.

Here is a good thread on water proofing a Samurai from a while back.  Most of the points hold true for a Sunrunner.

The best way to water proof a jeep is to keep it in the garage where it belongs. :laugh:

I think that phloop is a bit ticked by the use of the word "jeep" interchangably with "Asunna".   

No matter what you call it, your Asuuna Sunruner/Geo Tracker/Sidekick,Vitara/etc. is most definitely NOT a Jeep (a registered Trademark of Chrysler/Daimler or whomever owns Chrysler right now...).

Oh boy, I better shut my pie-hole before I say something stupid on this topic... ;D


On the subject matter at hand.

The most common ways to "waterproof" a 4x4 is to:

Plumb the transmission, transfer case and differential vents with watertight tubing that terminates as high on the vehicle as possible.

Build/install a snorkle that draws air into the engine from a high point on the truck.

After high water crossings, remove and thoroughly dry out your ECM.  Alternatively, you can change your intake system so that it no longer needs an ECM.  A "stupid" carb swap is a typical method.

If you had a Samurai, you could ship it to Dutton in the UK and have it converted for amphibious use.

Hey Ack, no troubles here. Refering to jeeps in general, not a Zuki called a jeep. My son calls my Sami a jeep and he isn't going to change. :laugh:


I figured he meant a Zuki of some sort.

Please be mindfull of the younger readers (grasshoppers) like my self, Watch your language.  J*** is not a word to be repeated ;D.       I dont know what it is about some people these days.  I am asked at least once a week   ( Hey What Year j**p is that? ) or ( AWSOM JEEP MAN! Fun off the topic fact.  Chrysler cannot use the term "The Original Jeep" as they were sued by the family of the old owner of American Bantum company, who made the original Jeep.  :P

 you guys need to get you one of them bumper stickers like  we have for our scouts that says ;PLEASE!!! this is not s jeep <-- [alert!]  ;D

as was said you need to  make sure you vent all your components up high . IE differentials trany and such 
Also remember your fan . If it’s a  solid  drive , go slow or you will bend the fan into the radiator .
 that’s  one of the reasons I run an electric in my scout .  Simply switch it off  and have fun . Snorkels are also a must


Also as to the ECM and other electronics .
 Get you a can of 422 / 422A conformal coating.  And spray the board and such down  good . Then using a good silicone , seal up the  box . don’t miss any joint or access  screws and such .
conformal coating.  Will protect your  ecm very well  but it has to be put right on the boards themselves .

 I have also used this for years in my scale RC float planes to protect the electronics  which are much more sensitive then any ECM .
 i have had my ECM well under water   and dripping wet  with no problems .
  Its alittle spendy but much cheaper then buying a new ECM   because you dunked it  in a hole that ended up deeper then you thought

Actually they sold off the old Sammy based model to a company in Florida or somewhere. They only make the Jimny version now.

Back on subject. I have found that theres no substitute for the OE spark plug leads. My 8V will run under water no problems. Of course it does wash the grease out of all the bearings so you if you do a lot of wading expect to continually replace wheel bearings, propshaft UJs, alternators, starter motors......
I also found that I got a lot of very fine stone material embedded in the belts where the silt was stirred up. It gets past the timing cover and into the timing belt too so replace that often.

you can do this nice i hate fuel injected any threds u know of on this and know wat make carb will fit thanks

The first Bantam's were built in my home town of Butler PA...

not that anyone really cares.. (sorry about the thread hijack)

to answer your question, a fresh set of plug wires, distributer cap and a liberal coating of dielectric grease is a not a bad start. I found out the hard way splashing through puddles I had old wires and a cracked cap...
