Samurai, larger tires but no lift?
« on: July 23, 2008, 08:58:13 PM »
Can you guys post pics of your Samurai's with larger tires (Id imagine not much bigger than 29", as 235/75r15s are what I'd be going with anyways most likely, if not still smaller) but with no lifts? I wanted to go a little larger on the tires for obvious reasons, but didn't want to lift the vehicle any higher than I need to for both safety (more roll-resistant) and just because I like the look of larger tires without a huge gap.

At the very most, ~2" of lift is what Id be going with (would probably actually just get new +1.5" springs).

Thanks!

The Sami on the left in the pic below is running 235s with no lift & same in the second pic.  In the third picture, he's running 235s with a SPOA lift.

Here is a Video of a Sammy with 235 street tires and a locker in the rear.

Just make sure you get some rocker protection.  :)

I recommend cutting out your corner, and replacing with angle iron. Even if you have to pay a welder to install it, it's cheaper and better clearance than buying one and bolting it on.

What do you mean by rocker protection, and from what would they need protecting?

And I can weld pretty well. I just built myself a bumper. Next up is a rear bumper and perhaps some accessories like nerf bars / rocker bars and a brace for my roof-mounted spare.

Although, I took the sammy out last night and made it through some stuff that suprised me. In fact, the biggest problem I noticed was a lack of power to push my current tires through deep sand, and not so much a lack of traction.

Rock Sliders, aka Nerf bars.  If your sitting pretty low and take it off road, you are going to drop your rig on rocks and smash the sides of your body up.  At least... I do that a lot.  :P

http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/samarmor.htm has some great examples from various companies.  On my SJ I just used some angle iron bolted onto the side of the body with some flat iron on the back side.

Ah I gotcha. Although it couldnt be any worse than with stock tires, heh.

Will there be a noticable loss in torque with just 29" tires? As I said, going through deep sand tended to want to bog the engine down. Taller tires would lower torque output, although being taller they would more easily "glide" over the sand instead of push through it. And, being a little wider they would sink even less deeply.

So, will I see such benefits using taller tires?
