Ticking Mystery???
« on: September 29, 2004, 04:35:37 AM »
Since I put in my 16v motor I have had a strange ticking that I cant figure out.  It seems to be related to ported vaccume as it does it only at part throttle weather or not the clutch is in or out.  I am very farmiliar with knocks pings tings ticks and clatters but this one has me stumped.  Has anyone encountered this before?  basicly it sounds like a very loud pcv valve but only in the early stages of part throttle.

I was getting an EGR code out of the computer so I removed it and checked it.  It was full of oil and goo from the rollover but otherwise fine.  Any other guesses???

Does it track with engine RPM?

Valve train?
Exhaust manifold gasket?
Cooling fan making contact somewhere?

You know what?  i firmly believe this has to do with valve adjustment.  now i know we have hydraulic valves in the 16v and they "shouldn't" need adjusting but, i think in extrme situations they do.

i bought my 95 trackkick in september 2002, in late October 2002 the cat pluged up and spit it's nastyness into my muffler; therefore pluging the entire exaust.  it did this just blocks from home so i continued to drive it less than a half mile.
i let her sit till i could get an appointment at the local muffler shop.  then drove it very slowly to the shop right around the corner.
after they replaced the entire exaust system, it ran awesome again but i noticed a ticking.  and i believe that driving it with the exaust plugged cause the valves to blow out of proper adjustment.  it so far has not effected the cars overall performance, and it runs perfectly fine, so i've never done anything about it in the last 2 1/2 years.  i've driven from michigan to california, and a ton of road trips and no problems.

so i guess it's harmless, might just suck down fuel a bit more.  i think mine is slightly more thirsty. since my cross country trek i fell just slightly 30 to 35 miles less than typical HWY mpg.  that could also be contributed to me driving an average speed of 70mph....so who knows.

The 1.6 16V motors do not have hydraulic lifters,
keep those valves adjusted, the Suzuki valves
seem to tighten as they wear, and that will
cause burned valves.

One thing I've noticed around here is when people get rid of their Trackers because something's wrong with the engine, it's a burnt valve or two 90% of the time... can that be remidied with aftermarket valves?

A valve tick is somthing I had considered however this is no valve tick.  I have heard many of them before and this sounds like its coming from outside the engine.  It is also to dependent on throttle to kick in and out.  I have checked all the bolts and the fan is clearing the shroud.  Im thinking it might be the vaccume valve for the EGR that sits on the back of the motor.

What about an exhaust leak?  That will cause an engine to tick without making it loud.

How did you break a T-case ???
Ya, a BB trip would be cool, Shoyrtt
is out here too and would probably
like to go and try out the Sammy with
all the new stuff in it.

I'm not sure about the adjustment specs
on the 16V, but the 8V is .006 intake and
.007 exhaust, they could go 1 thou looser
with no problems

And too keep from burning valves, keep
them adjusted, every 15,000 Miles should
be fine, most people never adjust them and
you get to pick up Track/Kicks cheep for burned
valves  ;)

I put Stainless Steel Exhaust Valves in the Turbo
SideKick, I wanted a little more protection than
the stock valves offer, but they were $20 each  :o

How do you think I got that running Tracker for $100? ;D

That makes sense, considering the general populace just wants something to drive and don't do any work on it... hell, that's how I make a living now, convincing the mechanically inept that they need a bunch of stuff because it's never been touched before ;D

Have you had a problem with the stainless valves yet? Probably've payed themselves off out of convienience of not having to pop your head off and replace burnt valves ;)

Well kept adjusted you won't have trouble
witht eh valves, Mine went 200,000 when
I had to pull the head because it wouldn't
pass smog check, and I don't think I ever
adjusted them before that, I thought that
they would loosten as they wear, WRONG
they tighten for some reason, so they burned

I have had no trouble witht eh SS valves, but
I don't have 200,000 miles on the engine yet
only about 75,000 since the head was done

And remember, even tho the valves are SS, the
valve seats are steel and they will burn too, if
the valves are too tight
