Diff Lock WELD IT!?
« on: July 29, 2008, 06:53:57 PM »
So I'm looking for a reason why I shouldn't weld my front spider gears. Everyone says if you do that it won't turn around in a football field. But if your hubs are unlocked why would it effect your steering at all?
I want to drive mine on the road, right now it's a trailer rig but that will change in the next week or so. And i had rather have a locked front than rear and when I lock the rear it's going to be an ARB or a mini spool cause I don't want to completely ruin my rear tires.

Thanks Chad

When you take off, most of your weight is transferred to the rear.  So your going to see better performance by putting a spool in the rear.  And I wouldn't worry about ruining tires with a mini spool in the rear.  They run just fine.

As for the front, your right.  You won't notice it with your hubs unlocked.  However, when driving on the trail you will need to leave one of your hubs unlocked in order to drive around on the trails.  And get out and lock it in whenever you might need it.  But if you really want to save the money give it a try.

You could also get a twin stick, and get the option of 2lo.
Just too see you you can make the turn in 2wd before undoing a hub.

I have a ARB in the front and rear.  When I lock the front locker, unless I'm in mud, I can't turn my tracker at all.  It's great for traction but sucks for turning.

So, like stated earlier you will have to run the trails with one hub unlocked until you need 4wd.  Then you will have to stop, get out, lock in the hub, then climb in and get going.  After the opsticle, you will have to reverse the above steps.

Also, you will find yourself in the middle of an obsticle where stopping and getting out will not be a good option.

The front end will still be locked together though.  Making turning a pain even if there is no power going to it.

So even in 2wd with the hubs unlocked it will suck to turn correct? That is the one question I have to answer.

Also with the tin stick can I shift on the fly with that set up? Pulling a trailer with my sammy starting off in 2 low and working my way up to 2 hi would be awsome, kinda like having a 10 speed and 2 reverse.

no man, in any gear youre hubs unlock you from the differential, 2 hi 4 lo whatever, you just cant wheel in anythingbut a straight line with a welded front diff without getting out and unlocking one, and if you dont have a power steering setup it will be hard as hell to even try, weld the rear, it is hardly noticable, until its a super sharp turn , plus like the other guy said it is more critical to have the back locked, hills ,accelerating etc,
if you were right, dont you think i'd agree with you?

No, you are stuck with only having one speed at a time.  :)  You can shift between 4wd and 2wd on the fly in the Trackers, not sure about with a Sammy.

Like Basher said, if you have your front hubs unlocked the front wheels are disconnected front the differential.  So there is no problem with the steering.

When the hubs are unlocked, it doesn't matter what you have in the diff, they're taken out of the equation. That's the point of unlocking them. It won't affect the daily on-road driving.

Twin sticks will help you turn. It's the power to the wheels, and the binding action that happens that causes the wide turning radius. I've ridden with someone that had modified their trans to do the same thing the twin sticks does... only it's one stick, and a H pattern... or a question mark or something. Anyway - it gives 2wd low. In 2wd low, it turned just fine. To do this, there's some kinda dtent ball that needs to be removed - it requires opening the case, but it's free to do.

That sounds awsome, I am already going to put 4:1 in my transfer case so while I'm in there I am going to go ahead and add the 2 low.
If you could send me the instructions on that mod that would be great, or if you can find the info somewhere let me know.
