87 sami keeps killing coils....
« on: August 25, 2008, 05:43:00 PM »
Ok, I am new here. Just got two sami's as a package deal.  the one is a 87 with a msd offroad 6 ignition on it.  I have drove it many of times here lately.  It also has a msd high vibration coil on it. the other day i lost spark. so i went to the local parts house and got a 12v stock coil. put it on, fired right up and then cut it off. went to start again..no spark. thinking the coil maybe a factory defect. i took it back and got a new coil. put it on and went about 100 yards down the road....lost spark.. now i ordered a new msd hvc. but it wont be here for a week or so..... what is going on... i do not want to put my new coil on and blow it. ( $50 down the drain)  Help me if you have any ideas what the problem is. maybe something i can test..........

Did you test the old coils, or just take a guess and replace them? Check all your grounds - get yourself a manual, and start checking everything that's electrical.

check with MSD , but I don't think there coils like a full 12v,  so if you have 12v |removethispart|@ the coil you may need to get a .08ohm resistor

Good luck

that resistor is if i had a stock ignition with a msd coil. i got the msd ignition and it worked fine before.  i changed the plugs and wires right before the hvc went out. could that have anything to do with it??

how do you test a coil?? i ask the parts house guy the same question and he said you cant test them just replace it.
check the coil w/an OHM meter.
you need the specs. for the coil you are testing. an msd coil resistance is different value than stock.
also- my '89 kick does not use a resistor for the stock coil(i'm using an msd2 blaster, no resistor).
if the coil you are using is suposed to have a resistor, check and see if there is actually one there(and vise/versa).
be careful |removethispart|@what parts counter people say. listen but do some research.
'89 kick w/little motor, still got pieces of jeff's pucks, stan's sticks into 4.24:1 tcase, 31x10.5x15's, rear lockrite, kick power steering, some radios(kj6esv), bmw seat, other changes just because. done on the cheap.
