i need to replace one of my CV boots, namely a left hand side inner (passenger side). i've taken the drive shaft off the vitara, and its sitting on the workbench.

even though we drive on the other side of the road, i think mechanically vitaras are all the same.

so how do you take the old boots off, and put the new ones on? i'm not sure if you have to take the driveshaft apart (CVs) or not, or is there a clip that holds everything together?



i should have asked this before i took the driveshaft off the vitara, as i'm stuck with no car tonight, and i don't really want to pay anyone to do it for me tomorrow.

  Just diving right in huh

On the inner side, there is a retainer
clip that holds the inner CV assembly
to the shaft, you will need snap ring
pliers to remove it the right way, a screw
driver will work in a pinch, careful to
not break the clip, once off the CV parts
can be removed from the shaft, it might
hang up, a light tapping will help.

once the CV cage and inner is off the shaft,
you can slide the old boot off, and replace it,
you can reuse the clamps that hold them on,
but it's a pain to open them up again.

You can use a pair of end nippers to squeeze
the new clamps in place, but make sure the
clamp is kind of tight before you squeeze it or
it can be too loose and let dirt/water in

BTW the outer boot has to be replaced the same
way, just slide it all the way down, big end first

there is some sort of cap on the end (diff side) how do i get this off??

You found the wire retainer, that is
what I was talking about if you have
too much lift, and too big of a strut
spacer, the CV balls will hit on the
wire and put dents in it.

For ease of trail changes, I leave the wire
retainer out, it's just there to keep the CV
shafts together as an assembly
