cel on, speedo related?
« on: September 06, 2008, 10:38:10 AM »
Anyone ever heard of a cel coming on from disconnecting the speedo cable? I'm trying to track down the source of a malfunctioning Cruise control and disconnected my speedo cable ( which is pretty well shot and causing the needle to bounce all over. )  Took it for a test drive and within 5 min the cel lite came on. Coincedence? I'm going to try and read the code now.

OK, ansered my own question. Threw a code 24, VSS. Speed sensor reads off speedometer signal, according to fsm, sec 8 33. Makes sense that the cruise control starting acting up about the same time the speedo cable really started to crap out. It's been shaking and pulseating for a couple years, mostly at low speeds, the faster I went the smoother it got , so I didn't care. Last trip to the mountains it started shaking pretty bad at highway speeds also, coincedently the cruise started acting up at the same time. It wouldn't  hold speed, it would engage, then accellerate, then pulse (speed wise) then disengage. I didn't want to get into changing the cable ( have a new one ready to go) It looks like a real pita, so I put it off. I guess now I have too.   Anyone change out a speedo cable in a 95 Trackick without removeing the heater core?

no eperience w/a zuk speedometer cable(yet), but i have suspected this problem w/another vehicle i have. it has been too intermitent to be "worth" it yet.
it has been a hassel replacing that cable in other vehicles. i remember when you could just replace the cable itself............

No need to pull the heater core.  Pull the instrument cluster and unhook the cable from the back.  Disconnect cable from trans. and pull cable out.  Slide new cable in from trans connection and reattach to the back of the speedometer.  This is per Duane.  He's had to replace my 95 cluster a couple of times.

Cruise control, huh.  I've forgotten what that's like.  By the way, say hello to Rita for me!

Its easier to disconnect from the tranny first and then push the cable through the bulkhead a little. That will allow you to pull the clocks out further to disconnect the cable.

Thanks all for the quick replys. The spastic speedo cable seems to be the culprit in the wayward cruise control. Replaced the cable ( did NOT remove heater core thank you, ) smooth needle, smooth cruise. Who woulda thunk it? Hey Little Red, I'll tell Rita, you tell Duane I said HI! Is it raining down there?
