Mitsubishi  Pajero Engine in a Vitara
« on: September 25, 2004, 04:02:10 AM »
Hi all.  Thanks for your RESOUNDING go ahead and buy the Vitara replies!!  I just bought a 97 4dr insurance write off.  The only problem is that the engine (1,6lt 16v) is toast).  I wanted to now if anyone knows of/about/how a Pajero(Dodge Raider in the US) 2,8lt inline 4 would work out in a Vit?  I have 2 of them in perfect condition and because I am in Turkey, finding a Vit engine will be next to impossible.  My next option would be a 2lt Escort Cosworth Engine (would trade the 2 Paj motors fro a COsworth w/Borg Warner T5).

One more thing, there is a local company 4xfourart making suspension and body lift lits.  They exclusively export them, but said that they could sell me one.  Do any of you guys in Europe have any experince with these kits good or bad?

Thanks guys

Can't rebuild the 1.6 ???
I think the work and expense of
and engine and trans swap would
be harder than a rebuild.

Also if the front driveshaft output is
on the left side it won't work with the
Vitara's setup, then there is the ECU
if the Pajero has EFI and all the other
stuff, wow that's a project and a half

Hi Wildgoody,

No the 1.6 has a cracked (more like explodd!) block.  The Drive shaft output is in line with vits and most importantly, the engines are both carbed.  I measured the engines and the bay, and new motormounts are a must, and I will probably have to go with an elec fan set up because the length of the mech fan on the Paj engine is too long.  I am still looking for a decent 1.6 os even a 2.0l v6.  But I was doing some research on the Cosworth engine, and with the mild cams, and the smallest turbo (you tell me???) it puts out 250 horses !!! that would be interesting now.  Have to do the math and the cost calc to see if I can pay for this in the next 4-6 months though :)

A Cosworth engine here is expensive,
and HP is a factor of PSI of boost and
RPM, and from what I know about the
Cosworth engine, it was built for high
RPM, like 8-10K it's a racing engine, if
you could find one and fit it, that would
be quite a radical setup.

With the Pajero engine/trans being the
same configuration as the Zuke, it could
be a less involved project than I thought
at first, and with a Carb system, it dropped
to a no worries swap in my book.

Now it's trans shifter location and such, might
look at that too so there are no surprises
on the install

Keep us posted

Over here I've seen people replace their old Mitsubishi Lancer engines with those 2.8L turbos (suppose to be really fast I guess).  That would probably be one of the fastest Vitras around if you could get it to fit.
