Machine work to block & head.
« on: September 25, 2004, 03:34:14 AM »
I've seen rebuild kits for my 1.6 8v and the price seems pretty good (especially since we're talking block & head for most kits), but I'm wondering what some of your experiences are with machining for these things.

Do they typically require much machining?

Do the shops have any problem with them?

What is the cost?

I noticed that after 240,000 miles the
cylinders had virtually no wear, cross
hash marks were still visable, tho smooth
in the cylinders.

Shoyrtt's 1.3 Sammie motor was the same,
no wear, and a guy down the street comented
the same about his 1.3 motor, so in my oppinion
don't bore the engine out unless you want bigger
pistons, I don't think it's needed.

To have a head done is about $200 US
I had Stainless Steel exhaust valves put in
at $20 ea more, so I spent about $300 for
the work on mine.

Cylinders about $10-15 per hole as they call it,
and have the rods checked and re-sized if needed,
also have the machine shop install the pistons
to the rods, it doesn't cost much and it saves
you from messing up a piston when you use
a vice to hold it.

Have the shop hone the cylinders too, the tool
is about $25 and the cost for the work is about
the same, so unless you plan on doing lots of
these have it done for you, if you have the block
bored out, honing is not needed.

Most shops deal with other Japanese engines,
which also have steel sleeves, so they shouldn't
have any problem doing your work

Plan on about $350 to do all of your machine
work it all adds up even tho it's not a lot for
each thing that needs to be done, to tank the
block cost $40, but it looks so nice and clean
it's worth having done, head too if it's getting
done at the same time/place

Good Luck

yea id say just giver n hone it out again, get some new rings n pistons ( if nessisary, ), check/replace bearings, seals, n ure set, i did a simple rebuild on my 1L sj410 motor, just slapped some new rings in, honed it out, checked out the bearings for play n such, runs awsome and only cost me a set of rings and gasgets.  and fluids ofcource
