Steering Wheel  Replacement
« on: September 23, 2004, 06:50:14 AM »
So I hate my steering wheel.  Its too big around, and its too skinny.  I went to Canadian Tire (like PepBoys, only better 'cause its Canadian  ;D) to look at steering wheel covers.  They have all these stupid "slip on" over you wheel for like $20, but they're crap.  The old stand-by lace up leather steering wheel cover doesnt make it any thicker, so its pretty much useless to me.  I guess its time to replace the whole wheel.

But theres an airbag in it.  How stupid would I feel if I put some aftermarket grant wheel on (without an airbag) and got into a head on collision the next day.  I tell you...I would feel very stupid.  So my question is this...can you replace an airbag equipped steering wheel with another airbag equipped steering wheel (either new, or from another vehicle).

Of course this would be the coolest. 8)

good luck with getting another vehicle's airbag to work on yours.  Some manufacturer's offer carbon fiber covers that still allow for the factory airbag to work.  But they are only for the cool vehicles (FS Chevys, etc.) More than likely the airbag will have to go bye bye.  When you do mess with the airbag, make sure the battery is disconnected and don't go pokin' at stuff with a screwdriver...BLAM!!!  That chain wheel would look awesome...as long as you have the full velour interior with the 360 degree rotating seats, etc.

Dude, airbags are stupid.  I have them disabled in my work truck and have done fine with out one in my Sidekick.  Just buy an after market steering wheel with out one.

You could always sell the air bags and the air bag computer for some pretty good jack.

Looks pretty good. Any problems hooking that up? or is there an actual kit made for SideKicks?

You guys don't like your 'kick steering wheels? Of all the vehicles that I've driven, it's my favorite, closely followed by my F-100...

I do that too sometimes :)

Just seems that everyone that I talk to has a bad opinion of Geo Trackers, and has no clue wtf a Sidekick is ;D

I'd like to have a Track/Kick wheel for my Samurai. I think it would be a little closer to the driver.

Any problems with the depth of that one?

I like the style, but I just went with a chromed 3-spoke with about a 4" depth so that I wouldn't have to reach too far for it or sit too close to it.  Oh,the wheel is a Grant knock-off attached with a Grant adapter kit.

I put a Kick wheel on my Sami. I'd guess it moves it an inch - 1 1/2 in closer & still leaves your fingers close enough to the control levers. The grip is a lot more comfortable, too. A good cheap upgrade for me.
