Uneven body movement...mismatched struts?
« on: September 25, 2008, 11:30:33 AM »
Hey all...just want to get some input from you regarding a recent problem.  I have my CALMINI kit on, but since the threads of one strut were stripped during the install, I kept my Old Man Emu strut on the passenger side, and have the new CALMINI strut on the driver side.  I seem to have a problem, and I'm wondering if the mismatched struts might be causing it, or if you have any other ideas.

When I take off from a dead stop, I've got some sort of twist in the body movement of the vehicle.  Not much....but just a little bit of a twist as I start to move forward.  At first, I checked all the bolts of my body lift, fearing maybe some were loose.  All was fine.  Everything seems fine with the kit (no upside down springs, springs out of place, etc.).  I'm thinking it's either the mismatched struts, something in the rear suspension (track bar or trailing arms maybe?) or maybe something to do with my rear lockright.  If only one axle was engaging, maybe that would explain it twisting slightly to one side.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions on this strange problem.

I would say the struts are the first possibility, and you need to get them even anyway, so bite the bullet and get another OME on.  95% chance that's it, but if it isn't, you won't have wasted your money as the Calmini struts are reported to be poor for durability.

I agree with ian on his comments on the struts.  Even if you have a screw on strut extender on the Calmini strut to help equalize the "length" of both struts, the actual travel (stroke) and dampening will be at odds with each other.  I(f you don't have an extender on the Calmini strut there would be a more significant difference in travel and dampening between the two.

But I believe you mentioned you have had this mismatched combo on since the Calmini lift install  because the threads on one of your OME struts got stripped during the install so you had to use one of the Calmini struts.   Wouldn't think the differences between the two struts would be so apparent during just a standard take-off from a dead stop.    Have you checked out (eye-balled) your strut and engine mounts?

The very first thing I thought when I read this was "LOCK RIGHT!"

I am 100% sure that this is your "problem". I have a Detroit Locker in the rear of my Sidekick and it does the EXACT same thing, it feels like the whole frame of the truck is twisting. This is 100% normal with this type of locker. Basically it is trying to "climb the gear". Don't worry about it.

So a locker will torque the body like that?  I never really noticed it until now.  I've had the locker about 8-9 months.  Strange.  I hope that's all it is.
