very weak spark
« on: September 29, 2008, 07:42:48 PM »
Hey, im a newbie to the site and it looks like an awesome site, im hoping you can help..
I have a 91 chev track that isn't starting. I have run a wire and spark plug directly from my coil to a solid ground and i get one weak spark when i first turn the ignition over and one more when i let off the ignition. My starter is turning over and battery terminals are NOT corroded. It is not my computer because i put it in my friends sidekick and it ran fine in his. it isnt the ignitor either as i have put the same friend's working ignitor on mine. I have also tried new plugs, wires, and coil. It must be something in between the coil and key.

It could be the trigger unit in the distributor.

i was thinking tho by running a wire and plug directly from my coil i would find out if i had a distributer problem. Theres is not sufficient spark directly from my coil, where there should be lots of spark producing

What Rhino is getting at is that the trigger unit tells the ECM the crank angle, thus the ECM then triggers the ignitor. If the ECM doesn't know the crank position, it won't fire the ignitor.

There should be a Hall sensor in your distributor to take a look at. (2 wires go to it).

It could be that, ill look at it tonight. I was thinking also, could be a wire grounding on something and sending the charge to the ground? would that be a possibility?

Could be a dirty ignition switch also.

It's also worth checking the ground strap on the distributor and , and checking for batt + on the coil. simple but can cause headaches.

is the hall sensor the unit right below the rotor? and i was also wondering how to check to see if that part is still good? is the hall sensor seperate from the trigger unit?
