carburetor questions

carburetor questions

just got my new sammi going pretty good but there are still a few bugs to work out. it looks like the diaphram around the top of the accelerator pump is leaking some gas, the choke is not working, and when i go up or down a hill it runs like poo. the rebuild kit is only $50 for it, but i have been thinking about a weber. are there any advantages to the stock carb over the weber or are they not worth rebuilding? it is stock except for some added rust holes and dents and i dont have a whole lot of money to pour into it at the time. any advice would be good, thanks.

I never liked the Webber's but some do, those stock carbs I hear are kinda tough to rebuild, There is a guy in las Vegas Suzuki John maybe that still rebuilds them.
1987,1988,1988,1990 samurai's,  1953 m38a1,  1996 x-90,blue.1996 x-90 red.1994 2 door tracker.   only Dead Fish go with the flow.                No Hairy Nosed Wombats were ran over on the trail today.       My ZUK is Xenophobic.

i was looking at it and it does seem kind of a pain to rebuild. cant be any worse than a quadrajet though, lol. i guess if you still want to wheel one then the best is to stay stock, go with fuel injection, or the harley carb swap then huh? i dont have money for the last too so if anyone else has any ideas let me know.

i live in california and have to smog every 2 years.
i prefer my weber, but keep my stock arrangement to put on to get the pass. i feel guilty cheating the system, but it runs better with the weber.
i have put a carb kit in the stocker, it's cheap and not as bad as some overhauls, but is really just a clean-out. if any of those solenoids or switches are bad it sounds like $$$ to me.
i have no smog(other than PCV and cat/converter) with the weber, and unplug the computer.
took a bit to setup and tune, but has been very reliable.
side drafts sound interesting, but i haven't funded that yet.
'89 kick w/little motor, still got pieces of jeff's pucks, stan's sticks into 4.24:1 tcase, 31x10.5x15's, rear lockrite, kick power steering, some radios(kj6esv), bmw seat, other changes just because. done on the cheap.

i have dual side drafts webber 40dcoes on my 87 sammy and it rips. alot of horse power .  when you go up a hill it floods a lil// when you roll on your side it bogs out and dies.  you do clean up alot of hoses and things.   but im selling them now   i want to go to fuel injection.
built sammy locked front an rear full roll cage 6 5 1 tc gears 96 16v motor and alot alot of mods

i have heard you can really clean up all the hoses and stuff with the weber, but how is it when you are wheeling?
since i have bypassed the egr valve(removed),i was able to remove all that related valving and switching.
also the idle-up stuff for the stock carb.
i'm still using the stock fuel pump with a pressure regulator.
i have the weber mounted w/float bowl toward the firewall(seems backwards) 'cause it flooded on climbs the other way. slightly lowered the float and limited it's drop.
still has a tendency to flood down hill, but climbs great. off camber doesn't seem to affect it, just the down hill, and i've gotten used to it.
i hear some of those side drafts will run upsidedown. i don't want to find out.
some day i do want to play with a pair.

i hear some of those side drafts will run upsidedown. i don't want to find out.

My SJ-410 has a  side draft and ran while I was on my side on a hill.  Not completely upside down, but the engine was happily chugging along.  :)

are you running a pressure regulator?
is your float set too high?
is the float needle leaking?
was this a new weber 32/36?
something's screwed up and your pro should be able to figure it out.
if the carb is tilted so the float chamber is much higher than the venturies, fuel will start leaking into the bores.
that can be limited by adjusting float height and drop.
by mounting bowl to firewall it should only happen on down runs(and shouldn't be too bad).
i've been happy w/mine and it runs fine from sea level to over 8800 ft(crossed forestdale divide).
start bugging your pro to straighten it out?

i think i will be ok with just a down hill sputter. looks like the weber will be iin the near future. so is the best one the 32/36 or i have seen one that is a 34? you guys running the electric choke or manual? thanks for all the responses!

guess i misunderstood. thought you had a weber on it already.
32/36 is what i have. manual choke.

see if you can get a 2-piece adapter? i hear they are better than the one piece like i have, and i did have trouble getting it to seat well.

mine are 40 dcoe dual side drafts and the run like run on hills but on the street it rips
