Painting chrome rims?
« on: September 20, 2004, 11:12:11 AM »
I have an old set of 15" American Racing chrome plated steel rims off my Sidekick. They are in decent shape, a little surface rust. I want to paint them black, I figure I will sand all the chrome  with around 80 grit until its nice and dull and then apply an etching primer and finally finish with a coat of black. I'm not sure whether I'll go with a flat or a gloss black. Anyone ever paint over chrome? Do you think this will hold up?, I have no problems respraying the wheels once in awhile to maintain them.  I definately want to go with black wheels and the chrome on these isn't in the best shape so I figure this will save me around $50 a wheel.  Any comments or suggestions.?  Thanks.

Semi-flat holds up well or a HAMMERITE Paint.
I've used black Hammerite paint  (touch of silver in it)on my rock sliders and so ar it has held up well.
A couple of thin coats will hold up well and easy touch-up.

Sand, prime and paint...that's what I did for my winter rims, but they weren't chrome.

Black Powder Coat, I don't know
how well it holds up to use, but it
should stick to the chrome well

These are painted chrome, been wheeled in deep mud, rocks, downed trees brush etc.A few need touching up but considering where they have been there doing great. Just be sure you get any rust off or it will reappear.I sanded then used a wire brush in drill to get a smoother finish, wipe with thinner to remove oil/grease,prime,paint.   Later  M.Z.

i painted the cromes on my tracker with black paint first (no primer) and it peeled quickly then i just painted them with undercoating stuff  and it holds up fine.
