Choke sticking?
« on: October 10, 2008, 10:59:30 AM »
So it has begun to get cold here in Utah and already my mileage has dropped. Last year I had a post about bad gas mileage and i thought it was because I didn't drive it, well it got better and now thats it cold again it has dropped again. Could I lube to choke up so it doesn't stick anymore or is it inside the carb? If anyone has pics so I know what to look for Thanks.

What could cause my mileage to drop 80 miles per tank when the temp drops. I could understand like twenty because letting it warm up, but 80 miles what could cause that? It starts right up in the morning when its 30 degrees out. How much does the cold weather affect mpg? Any experiance with this happing to others? Mine is an 88.5 Samurai stock engine and carb.

One factor in poor mileage in winter is the blend of gas.  Around here the gasoline is diluted with something during the winter months to reduce pollution.  I have noticed a couple of miles per gallon difference--miles per tank is not very meaningful.

I am not familiar with the choke system on your Samurai.  Those that I have worked on were adjustable.  The trick on the old Fords I had was to adjust it cold to just close the butterfly.  The heat of the exhaust would then open it at about the right time to keep it running right.  I suspect yours is not sticking, or it would probably act up all year.  If no one here has any ideas, perhaps you could find a shop manual--factory is usually best, but some of the aftermarket manuals in the parts store are ok--and find out how to check your adjustment.
