1.6 8v to 1.6 16v no comp.
« on: October 16, 2008, 01:42:44 AM »
I got a broken 1.6 l 8 valve in a 2 door 94 sidekick, i have access to a 1.6 l 16 valve for a small fee.  I don't want to have to hassel with the wireing harness so what if i carburate the 16 valve, can i get  rid of the computers? also will the manual tranny from the 4 door sidekick fit in place of a manual tranny of a 2 door?

Halfman:

Practically speaking, you will be trading one hassle for another if you try to carburate a 16-valve instead of just dealing with the wiring harness.

Because the 16-valve head is designed for fuel injection, you will have to fab an intake to adapt a carb to it.  If your fabbing skills are up to it, then this may be the way to go.

The wiring harness approach is not that hard.  There are plenty of engine wiring diagrams online at Ack's FAQ - and other places on the internet - to help you get th job done.  There are also vendors that will do it for you.  There is next to nothing out there on the Internet about carbing a 1.6 16-valve Suzuki engine.

Fuel injection offers so much more in terms of fuel economy and performance compared to carburetion.

There is also the possibility of swapping out the bad component on the 8-valve engine (broken or bad block?) with the one on the 16-valve

On the transmission question, I don't believe that there is a physical difference between the 2-door and 4-door manual transmission unless one is a 2WD and the other is a 4WD.  Even then, the difference may only be a matter of swapping output sections.  The magic of mass production...

I hope that this helps!

If the block or a block component (crank, rods, pistons, etc.) is bad, you can swap the 16V block for the 8V block.
If you want to carb a 16V, the "simplest" way to do it would be to use the 8V head and intake on the 16V block and use a samurai or samurai compatible carb (like a weber).  It won't be real easy, but it is doable.
The 16V and 8V trannys are interchangeable, but there are a couple of differences.....1) the 16V has some extra support bracketry between the engine and tranny bellhousing....if you want to keep this bracketry, swap the 16V bellhousing to the 8V tranny.  2) 5th gear in the 16V tranny is .795, 5th gear in the 8V tranny is .86 (meaning your RPMs will be about 300 RPMs lower at 60MPH with the 16V tranny).
