« on: September 12, 2004, 11:12:19 AM »
Hello again guys, (I love this site 'cause I can ask anything!) I'm trying to 'upgrade my air intake system for my 1991 sidekick (8v.) I went to CALMINI again for the one they have there, but "is not out for sale yet!" so since I've read that almost all of you have done it, can you help me and tel me how to do it? ??? thanks a lot again for your help. ;D

Depends... if you just want some sort of cold air intake, just get yourself some PVC tubing, a K&N cone filter (for the HawsPOWA!), and some sheetmetal to make a heat guard and build it yourself... really not that hard to set up.

so that's 'THE BEST WAY" to do it? I just want to be sure, I want to 'improve the performance" of the car, and since I live in Las Vegas,(temperature around 100's) cooler air would be 'appreciated' .

Could always hack a hole in your hood and route your filter there ;)

Tha's funny, I was thinking about installing a hood scoop right on top of the filter :D

That would work.

safarikick: when I had my cone filter like that, it worked alright until the engine got up to heat... then it was doggy :-/

what do you mean by 'got up to the heat'? and how bad was the damage done? :o

First of all, when I put in a new k&n filter in the air box, I could climb hills better, run the a/c or heat full tilt with no engine drag and my rig actually smelled great! NO MORE DUST, better off the line with acceleration and a nice engine sound. I can only imagine what a cone filter with a scoop would do, in league with a performance header and exhaust setup!

loko, if you build a setup, let me know how it goes and don't forget to post some pics. I've been interested in custom air intake as well, but I fear the experience that explo shared. When the engine heats up, with that filter so close to it, you'd be sucking in hotter air than you want. I like my airbox k&n setup, but if there's something better, I'll do it for sure! Does someone have a different setup with a bit of distance between the engine and the air intake? And with a hood scoop maybe? How would you configure the scoop and what would you need to do it?

not sure if you guys need to run a snorkel,
but i did this to mine,

Basically dumped the stock air box that sat on top of the Carb and got a 1995 injection box.

I took an old Land Rover filler tube that was the slightly bigger than the vitara carb,  made a rubber seal cut it to just below the bonnet as it had a slight curve in it and then used a bigger diameter pipe to run from the carb to the stock injection air box. It then is directly connected to my stainless steel snorkel the only bottle neck is the air box.  i would say i have imporved perfeormance and air flow.  I just need to get teh k&N replacement filter,
you can just about see it on this picture

No more damage than starting it up and driving it every day.

got up to heat as in normal operating temperature, IE: warmed up. With the filter there, it's less than a foot above the intake manifold with no heatsheilds or anything to prevent exhaust heat from being sucked into the intake, decreasing performance.

I now run a PVC snorkel, though ;)
