GEAR RATIO???? HELP PLEASE???
« on: November 05, 2008, 01:15:15 PM »
I have a 97 tracker automatic. How do you find out what gear ratio it would have in it without pulling out the rear diff?? Does anyone have a clue onhow I can achieve doing this? I looked for a tag or a stamp on the rear housing but I couln't locate one anywhere on it. Any help would be greatful. Thanks, Serious.

i'm gonna be watching for responses to this question also.
i had my diff. apart to put a locker in it, but got so excited |removethispart|@ putting it back together and back in that i forgot to count teeth!
i've thought mabe index the drive shaft and wheel and count turns..........
'89 kick w/little motor, still got pieces of jeff's pucks, stan's sticks into 4.24:1 tcase, 31x10.5x15's, rear lockrite, kick power steering, some radios(kj6esv), bmw seat, other changes just because. done on the cheap.

A 97 should have the 4 speed automatic with the 5.12 gears in the diffs.  :)

you could get the vin and take it to the dealer and the parts department maybe will tell you. thats how it works at my work. ( ford dealer )

also you can jack up the rear and with whiteout mark a line on the drive shaft and on a tire and spin the tire once slowly and count how many times the drive shaft rotated and that will give u a basic and pretty close gear ratio est.

1 block the vehicle to keep it from rolling
2 put the transfer case in neutral to disconnect the driveshaft from the tranmission
3 raise ONE rear wheel off the ground with a jack.  If you raise both wheels, spinning one wheel will only make the other wheel spin in the opposite direction.
4 As SNJSamurai stated, mark a spot on the rear differential input flange and a spot on the third member case next to the flange with white-out.
5 rotate the lifted wheel one revolution while counting how many times the two adjacent marks on the flange and the differential line up with themselves.
6 eyeball the final position of the white-out mark on the flange in relation to the other white-out mark to determine the complete - with fraction part - differential drive ratio.

example:  If the flange turns four times and the final position of the flange white-out mark is a little past half-way around the driveshaft rotation, the the differential is most likely 4.625.

Here is a link to a post thread that documents the variious R&P combinations available on Sidekicks and Trackers (at least in the USA...)

I hope that this helps!

OK, I have pondered what gear ratios might be in a diff and read many post about how to determine the gear ratio.  Recently I have disassembled several Tracker diffs on my quest to have 5.83 diff gears and a steel front diff carrier. I had bought a new set of never installed 5.83 gears. (Yes, I felt like I had found the holy grail of Tracker diff gears) For the front steel diff carrier I had to disassemble a 2002 Vitara front diff.  I found something I have never seen anyone on any of the Suzuki forums mentioning.  On all the Suzuki diffs I disassembled I found the ring gear count is painted on the outside bottom of the carrier in large clear numbers.   Since all the diffs from a 96 to a 2002 that I disassembled were 5:12 ratios the number painted on the bottom in large lettering was 41R for a ring pinion with 41 teeth. It was painted on the front diffs and the rear diffs.  So if you know the teeth count of different ratios you can easily tell what ratio is in you Suzukis. Just carefully clean the diff with something that will not dissolve the paint and presto the diff ratio in known.  On the front diffs it was painted on the mount extention.  Hopefully your diff was not repainted or cleaned with lacquer thinner so the numbers will still be there.

4.30 gears have a 10/43 tooth count
4.625 gears have an 8/37 tooth count
5.125 gears have an 8/41 tooth count
5.375 gears have an 8/43 tooth count
5.625 gears have an 8/45 tooth count

Either 5.12s or 4.30s, depending on whether it is a 2 door or 4 door.

If you are going to check it by doing the" lift 1 rear tire and count driveshaft revolutions" method....you have to spin the tire 2 complete revolutions to get the driveshaft to turn the correct number of times (because of the spider gears).....for example, if the driveshaft turns 4 and about 1/3 turns then you have 4.30s, if it turns 5 and a little bit past you have 5.12s.
