How to easily tell the diff gear ratios in your Suzukis
« on: November 05, 2008, 04:59:51 PM »
OK, I have pondered what gear ratios might be in a diff and read many post about how to determine the gear ratio.  Recently I have disassembled several Tracker diffs on my quest to have 5.83 diff gears and a steel front diff carrier. I had bought a new set of never installed 5.83 gears. (Yes, I felt like I had found the holy grail of Tracker diff gears) For the front steel diff carrier I had to disassemble a 2002 Vitara front diff.  I found something I have never seen anyone on any of the Suzuki forums mentioning.  On all the Suzuki diffs I disassembled I found the ring gear count is painted on the outside bottom of the carrier in large clear numbers.   Since all the diffs from a 96 to a 2002 that I disassembled were 5:12 ratios the number painted on the bottom in large lettering was 41R for a ring pinion with 41 teeth. It was painted on the front diffs and the rear diffs.  So if you know the teeth count of different ratios you can easily tell what ratio is in you Suzukis. Just carefully clean the diff with something that will not dissolve the paint and presto the diff ratio in known.  On the front diffs it was painted on the mount extention.  Hopefully your diff was not repainted or cleaned with lacquer thinner so the numbers will still be there.

4.30 gears have a 10/43 tooth count
4.625 gears have an 8/37 tooth count
5.125 gears have an 8/41 tooth count
5.375 gears have an 8/43 tooth count
5.625 gears have an 8/45 tooth count

So why hasn't anyone mentioned this?  Is it true for all Suzukis?  Let me know if what I have found is true and post your results.  I don't know if it apply to any other Suzukis other than those I mentioned.
