Need help for FJ40 axles to Sammy swap
« on: September 14, 2004, 04:03:27 AM »
I just got some FJ40 axles and I'm looking for some info, pointers, hints, warnings or anything that will assist me in putting them in my sammy.  Does anyone make SPOA pads that are meant for this type of setup?  Will the highsteer arms I've seen for toyota truck axles work for this setup?  Also, does anyone know how much wider they will be than my stock sammy axles?  Any info, especially pics and webpages would help alot.

Those are going to be some heavy axels.  You might be better off going for some Dana 44's or Toy Axels.

You can get a set of spring pads from just about any aftermarket Suzuki company,  Hawk Suzuki has a nice set, if you are using stock springs.  If you are running YJ or CJ springs, get a pair of pads for that particular spring pack.

Measure the distance in between your spring packs then mark it on your axel.  Grind your pads down so they fit on the tube and weld them in place.  Once that is done get a new set of U-Bolts that are the proper length and bolt it up.

Once that is done measure the driveshaft lengths to find out what size is required then take the FJ40 shaft and the Suzuki Shaft to a driveline shop and they can splice them together for you.  I sent mine down to Hawk Suzuki when I put the Track gears in the SJ410 and they did a great job.

For the steering you will have to hit someone else up, as I have no idea.  :D

Are FJ40 axles that much heavier than toyota pickup axles?  I'm looking at running some rediculous gearing, a 1.6L and 35's so I kinda like the beef of the LC axles (my buddy ran a decent V8 with 4.10 gears and 36" swampers and had to really work to induce breakage in his Cruiser)

As for steering, I think the Toyota axles OTT steering setup from Rocky-Road should work.  Does anyone know if the Toyota pickup and LC steering knuckles are similar enough to use this setup?

At the very least I want to run the LC rear axle as its got the right ofset for the Sammy, but if the front is gonna be a major pain, I may look into a pick-up rear axle.

The FJ40 axles are about the same width and weight as the truck axles. About the steering, check either Sky Mfg, Roadless Gear, Northcoast Offroad, Breeze Industries, Rocky Road Outfitters, Trailtough, or maybe Hawk about the crossover/hysteer for the Toy in sammy axle swap.
Hope that helps.

They are a bit heavier, yes, but I don't know the exact amount.  But if you want to not worry about breakage, run with it.  Besides, it gives you a good reason to jump up to 37's when you loose your fenders.  ;D

If you have the time you should be able to swap the tubes around on the front axel so your offset is on the opposite side, fixing your offset problem.  Or just flip your axel over and rebuild your knuckles?  I haven't looked at an FJ axel in a while, so I don't know if this is possible or not.

Run'em, I have them and they're not much heavier than mini-truck axles. But, the diff. is larger, 9.5 inch ring gear as opposed to the truck at 8 inch. You will lose some ground clearance with the FJ's. Also, the rear IS a c-clip axle, but the toy guys don't seem to view it as a concern up to 36/37" 'ers, and if you saw the axle diameter, you wouldn't sweat it, either. My spring perches are All-pro three-hole perches. Nice and long to fight axle wrap a bit. Fit the FJ's perfectly.
Steering, Get Sky's stuff, and get an 85 FJ-60 steering gear with forward facing pitman arm, otherwise you will need to cut the left front body mount off the frame for p/s clearance. You could also use sky's toyota to sammy setup as mentioned earlier and run 'kick p/s, but I like the beef of the toy stuff.  What year axles do you have? Why do you think the front will be a PITA to run

I didn't think they'd be a pain at all.  I'm just looking to gather as much info as possible before jumping in.  I was actually looking at the Rocky-roads steering but and just keeping it manual for now.  After the wallet stops hurtin, I'll put a power steering setup in.  Do you have picturs of your toyota steering swap?  What parts did you need to make or change?
