Samurai engine swap question.
« on: November 08, 2008, 05:41:32 PM »
I've read so much information on here about swaps that I'm going crosseyed.  I currently have a 88 samurai, spoa and oversize tires. (235/75/15)  Stock engine and gearing.  I have access to a 1.6 , 16 valve engine with a bad head.  No computer or wiring harness.  I have read that I can put my 1.3 head and intake on the 1.6 block and run my carb and wiring.  Is this advisable?  How much more power would that give me?  Does anyone have horsepower numbers for comparison.  Open to suggestions.  Any info is greatly appreciated.. Thanks.

You would be about 80 horse or so. It's a great swap. you'll need a 1.6 8V crank gear and timing cover and cam gear. Then you use an 8V timing belt. Fairly simple.

So one says yes and one says no.  Anyone else?  Could I use the 1.6 cam gear on the 1.3 head and use 1.6 timing belt.  Would like to hear from someone who has actually done this.

1.3 and 1.6 8v share same design.  The 1.6 8v is just a longer stroke.  1.6 16v is completely different than the sammy 1.3L.  I believe the 1.6 16v is similiar in parts to a 1.3L swift engine.

Basically if you are looking to stay carbed and cheap you need a 1.6 8v.  I have swapped in a 1.6 8v in my sammy and its nice but I went the extra step to keep the fuel injection.  You just need the wiring harness from the donor vehicle and pay someone to strip it down to fit the sammy.  I think I paid $300 to have Sean from aftermarket4x4 do mine.  Once the harness is done you really only clip in about 8-10 wires and your done.  No more stalling out on hills like all the carbed sammys do.  Yes the 1.6 8v puts out less HP than the 16V version but the advantage is its a non-interference engine.  Which means when the timing belt breaks you don't replace the engine.  :^)  Plus when you do change your timing belt it takes the fear out of doing it yourself.

Swift 1,3 8v is identical to the sammie one (other than distrubtor) The 16v 1.6 has exactly the same block as the 1.6 8v. But the noches in the pistons will not match between a 8v and a 16v, so It will not be a non interferance if you swap heads. The internals differ some, but I it's possible to run a 1.3 head on a 1,6 16v block, but you will probalby not get even 80hp out of it.

all G-block suzuki engines are non interferance according to suzuki...

I know a couple of people who have run a 1.6 8V head on the 16V block and not had any problems. The 1.3 head shouldn't be an issue either.  It will most likely be an interference engine but if you change the timing belt when required then you shouldn't have any problems. The belts aren't expensives. You won't get much more peak power than the stock 1.3 (around 65bhp) but you will get a lot more low down power. To get the most out of the 1.6 you need a bigger carb.

So I would be better off to rebuild the 1.6 head and use it.  The preavious owner disassembled all the valvetrain.  Where could I get an exploded view diagram to help me reassemble it?  I might as well use the fuel injection and try to find a wiring harness and computer.  The motor is out of a 93  four door sidekick.  What years can I use for donor computer and wiring harness?  Thanks for all the help.
