Tracker wont start
« on: September 03, 2004, 07:58:46 PM »
Well after 3 years of driving my truck with no problems what so ever I finally have a problem. I turn the key and my dash lights ie brake and all that turn on but the starter doesnt do anything.
My step dad said if the lights dont dim while I turn the key, it means the starter isnt getting the power. My lights and everything work though.
He thinks it might be a relay, any ideas?

i would start by taking off both of your battery connections and cleaning them really well

if that doesnt work make sure the battery is really charged (happened to me before lights were bright but the batt was dead)

if that doesnt solve anything get down to the started and clean those connections...

finally if that doesnt work take off the starter and take it to something like kragens..they will usually test the starter for u

dont blame the alt just yet..my mom has an 02 GV v6

it started really slowly and would idle fine..but the min u put it in drive it would die  :o i got all worried and thought it was something major...all it was was the batt needed to be charged and later replaced lol

edit..i also forogot to mention that my batt died one night presumably from the stereo :( lol

but we got a jump start..and the car drove..it just had no battery power lol if u turned on the heater the lights would dim REALLY badly because it was running straight from the alt

Update:
The battery is fully charged, still same problem.
We tried to pop start it but it did nothing, no spark.

ok so u are getting power everywhere in the interior

do the headlights/taillights work?

does the starter still not click??

im sorry but i do not know the elec system very well in these cars...

i dont know if the coil gets power after the starter..like some cars the power goes through the starter doesnt it??

i think these cars power goes to the fuse box then to the starter right??

Did he force it on with a hammer or something?

I thought that's one of the more idiot-proof things to do :P

first he cross threaded the set screw for the rotor..then tried to drill it out making the holeoblong

then he ran the dist w.o the cover between the rotor and goings on inside the dist..also he pushed the little shaft the rotor sits on deeper into the valve train..so the rotor just ate the crap out of everything inside the dist..  :o

after all that it should have been no shock to me he did what he did to me..sigh waht an idiot im glad i couldnt fix it now =)

Yes int, brake, and headlights get power.
The starter no longer clicks, but something near the firewall clicks about 2 seconds after I let go of the key clicks.

I'd say check all your ground wires... look for corrosion, especially by the starter, and the wires from the battery to the starter.
