CARB TROUBLES!
« on: September 10, 2004, 03:24:13 PM »
I hate the freakin Hitachi carb!!!! Ok so i rebuilt it , new jets, gaskets yada yada yada. Which i regret doing now, i should have bought a Weber >:( But now to keep it from just dieing when i start it because the idle is too low i cranked it up. so when i start it the choke is working and it idles at 2000. then when it warms up the choke dies and i have to keep my foot on the gas a little to keep it running when i let it idle. how do i remedy this?

( i know 2 threads in 15 minutes im on fire right? :P :) )
You can take the Sammy off the trail, but you cant take the trail out of the Sammy.

I would rather have a good factory carb then a Weber.  When the factory carbs are working right they are hard to beat.

I've never had a Hitachi carb and it's been a long time since I opened a carb up.

I'm sure it could be a lot of things, but a bad float adjustment is the first thing that comes to my mind.

So, at the proper idle speed, it stalls?

Can you richen the mixture with an air/fuel mixture screw?

Are there any vacuum lines on the carb?  If so, did you double check to see they're all hooked up where they should be?

I found my trouble, I took a can of carb cleaner with a tube nozzle on it and sprayed around the carb and vacuum hoses. I found a crack in one on the manifold in front of the carb, now it runs great. When the carb spray finds the leak the engine runs good till it burns it up. Good luck with yours. :)

 8)  ...

... but hopefully that's a seriously misplaced/ambiguous pronoun...  "the engine runs good till it burns it up"   ;D

First I have to admit that I have never worked one one of these carbs but I have done lots of others so Ill tell you what I would to to trouble check.  First check each vaccume line seperatly make sure they are all connected to the correct port (I hope you have a schematic).  Next check your base gasket for leaks use the carb cleaner trick listen for a surge in engine speed.  Grab the throttle lever and feel if there is any up down play in it thats a leak that gets worse over time.  Once you have checked all this its Idle circut time.  With the engine and choke warmed up.  I don't know the base Idle screw settting but I guess just start where it is.  you will need a tach for this.  turn the mixture screw out untill the engine reaches its peak rpm then turn the screw back in untill the rpm drops back down 50 to 75 rpm. If there is more than one screw you need to adjust them evenly together and make sure they start from the same point.  Now you should be able to adjust you idle speed screw to your desired Idle rpmIf you diddnt bend your choke linkage when you took the carb apart you shouldnt have to mess with it.  Some carbs have a seperate screw to adjust your high idle others use the same screw that is used on the low speed.  If its the later and your high speed is still to high some carbs have a vaccume pull off for the choke.  If that isnt working right it will sit to high on the cam and that could be the issue.  If you post some pics of the outside of the carb I might be able to give you a better answer.

Hope this helps
