O2 sensor replacement
« on: December 19, 2008, 12:26:47 PM »
Hi I own a 2003 Tracker I had the car scanned at autozone and they told me my bank 1 O2 sensor was out. I bought a replacement and replaced the sensor. the check engine light still stays on. I think that maybe the wireing is wrong. 2 wires are white I think those are the heater wires, 1 wire is red I think that is the signal wire, 1 wire is black with a white stripe I think that is the ground wire. Can anyone help?

A lot of other things can set your O2 sensor like bad gas or poor ignition(damp).Do you have v6 or I4 engine? If you can ,swap the Bad sensor with Bank2 sensor and see if the light goes out.It may take a week or so if it is bad gas.If no driveability problems then let it go for a while but do not throw out your old O2 sensor as I suspect it is still good.It took me a month to figure out for sure it was my O2 sensor so be patient.

The check engine light has been on for 6 months. The reason I need to fix it is my Safety inspection is due. I have a 4 cylinder engine.

I've heard that these trucks can be picky about the O2 sensors.  Sometimes, the "universal fit" sensors don't work so well.  You may end up needing OEM (Denso, I believe).  I've replaced all four in the last couple of months, at about 170000 miles!  I got a great deal on them online.

Was the O2 sensor the only code they found because quite often it is something else that is bad that sets it off.I'm sorry but I'm not sure of the wiring,I only have diagrams for I4engine.

Yeah my vehicle is at 70000 miles now. this was the only thing that showed up on the scan. What web site did you find the sensor on.

My diagrams are in my Haynes Repair manual. They are pretty good for backyard mechanics and not to expensive.I'm sorry but I don't have a scanner to post it for you.

I switched my bank one sensor with my bank two sensor for a couple of days to see if my codes changed, the wiring harness are different lengths but the connections are the same, and once I was sure it was the sensor I soldered the old harness on a scrapyard sensor.

How did you disconnect the connector. I am having a bit of trouble getting the connectors apart. I have used Hayes manuals in the past on other vehicles but have not been able to find one for a 2003 model Tracker/ Vitara.

A mechanic told me once that connections are designed to be taken apart with one hand,I've never been able to do it without a small screwdriver and small needlenose pliers.Try not to pull on the wires, try to see how it locks, there is a little tab that you have to push in or pry out.My 2000 tracker Bank two sensor connection was under the carpet under the drivers seat so I slit the carpet a little bit to disconnect it and pull a bit of wire thru. The two sensors were about six inches different in length, and the one under the seat has a grommet to keep water out of the connection.
