I'm having some problems with my 88 sami's steering.  Its real stiff to the right and jerky to the left.  Either way, it will not return to straight ahead.  Any ideas about what it could be?  A couple of guys have told me it might be the gear box.  Is there a way to add fluid or do you just have to change the whole thing?  I also had to change the water pump out a couple of weeks ago and after that it seems to smoke a bit.  Any ideas about the smoking and what rings i messed up? It got a little hot before i found out the pump was bad.  Any help on either would be appreciated.

For steering, I'd take it to an alignment shop. There's lotsa things it could be. Gearboxes can cause that, but it may be something simpler.

  If it got hot enough for the rings to lose there temper that would cause it to smoke.Does it smoke more on acceleration or coasting?Could be valve seals(I have seen em get hot enough to make the rubber seals crumble.Possibly a  cracked head somewhere around a valve guide or oil return hole near a combustion chamber.It would have to be a pretty bad crack though to make it smoke a lot ,and then you would have noticeable miss. Well it mainly seems to smoke when i give it the gas.  It doesn't do much when its just idling.  My father in law said that he has heard of people taking out the spark plugs and squirting in some transmission fluid to try and reseat the sills.  Has anyone heard of this and would it work???

  The valve stem seals are on the top of the head inside the valve springs,don't know how transmission fluid squirted in the cylinder might reseal em but anythings worth a try.It realy sounds like your oil controll rings have lost there temper though(their not as thick as compression rings and a little more susceptible to heat failure).  M.Z.

I wasn't sure about those on the Zuki. On a V6 (Dodge), it started using a *lot* of oil at 70K. It turned out 4 of the seals had popped off. Might be worth looking at.

First off what color smoke are you having? THat would aid in the proper diagnosis greatly. White smoke would indicate coolant entering the combustion chamber, or excessive fuel. being that it is carb. I would not think it is excessive fuel or you would have a drivability issue also.  Black smoke indicates Oil entering the combustioin chamber.  If it is white smoke and you said that it got hot I would start by doing a compression check. Look at the spark plugs when you pull them out. If one is cleaner than the other 3 this indicates that water is getting into that Cylinder. Personally if it were me I would pull the head and just replace tha head gasket and have the head set to a machine shop to be checked. Head gaskets are not to diffucult or expensive to do. Also when you do that  replace the valve seals wihile you have the head off. Any ways I hope that helps a little. Good luck.
