V6 manual in a 4 cyl vitara.
« on: January 17, 2009, 04:20:54 AM »
Is a 5 speed manual from a V6 GV a direct swap into a 4 cyl vitara?
Thanks

By what I can tell, the 2.0 L used what they called a "Type 1" transmission. The V6 used "Type 2" transmissions. As far as to whether you can swap them out, I'm not sure. They appear to be quite similar, but the V6 may have a different input shaft (stronger?) which means you may need to use a V6 clutch disk.

Just out of curiosity, what's up with your transmission? I just rebuilt mine because I couldn't find a used one within a reasonable distance and price.

I rebuilt mine this summer but I did not put new synchros in and now my 2nd gear is starting to scratch. I was thinking that the gv tranny would be stronger and they seem to be easier to locate for some reason.

4CYL AND 6CYL same internal bs. mine grinds also and so does another friends.

There was a certer housing update on the V6 also.

What type of oil you using.

My tranny used to grind 2nd gear pretty bad. I did 2 oil changes with royal purple and my grinding issues and gear selection in -55 has gone away.

Most times the syncros itself on the back side get full of metal dust and start to stick and causing it to not move as freely and you get a grind or notchy shift.

Well last night i had the tracker on the hoist and the bell housings look different and there is a big difference in transmission size in the v6 vs the 4cyl.

I'd bet that you could bolt the 4 cyl bell housing on the v6 transmission. These transmissions are different than a typical manual transmission in the fact that you have to remove the transmission & bell housing as a unit and then separate them after you have it on the bench.
