I've heard that you can increase the out put of the sidekick power steering pump by putting a washer under the spring behind the bolt with the wire. Follow me? What I don't understand is if you need to or can remove the copper tube in the center?

Has anyone done this?

I've done the washer (it works) to increase pressure. There's also some hole you can drill out (one size bigger drill bit only) to increase volume (I've not done this). I also slapped in a 2-pass cooler in-line on the low pressure side, and ended up stuffing it behind the driver's side headlight. I wanted it somewhere that would get better flow, but didn't have enough tube at the time of install. I didn't bother getting more tubing or re-locating it 'cause it kept the fluid from boiling over on 37" tires, aired down to 8 lbs, in the middle of summer, through the Rubicon  :)

37" aired down and I am having a hard time turning 33" skinnies (if I'm not moving). Did you pull out the copper tube inside? were did you get your coolers?

I am running 33x9.5x15 BFG MTs and love them.

Hey.... I noticed that you are using Pep-Boys MT on your sidekick. How do you like them.

Love 'em. They grip very well in mud, snow, sand, rocks and don't hum too loud on the street. Basically they're a very streetable M/T. Perfect for aggressive tire on a DD. They're not nearly as heavy as Super Swampers 'cause of the thinner sidewalls (which means you need to watch it more when wheeling). Wait 'till they're on sale.

They didn't turn too well when I was just sitting there, but I hardly EVER try to turn a tire when I'm not moving at least a little bit (less stress on steering components = less breakage). Going up to a Toyota P/S system would be better if you have beefed up tie rod ends to handle it.

I believe you have to remove that copper tube to drill out the hole in there (if you want more volume), but if you want more pressure, you just need to shim the spring. If you need to remove that tube to get to the spring to shim it (I can't remember), then yes - remove it. If the spring is before (or, I believe around) the coper tube, then you don't need to remove it to shim the spring. The idea is to add spring pressure, which increases the pressure going to the steering box.

I used a 2-pass cooler from a Ford Explorer's power steering setup. It's located under the engine, on top of the cross member. It comes with a couple mounting tabs - which is sweet.
