97 4 door sport IN NEED OF HELP!!!
« on: January 30, 2009, 10:20:49 AM »
My car has been having some difficulties, mostly stalling, rough idling  and not wanting to go past 35, so I took to my mechanic and he said its the MAF sensor. Problem is I just got off the phone with autozone and they said "...those models don't have a MAF sensor, sir."

Help?

it should have a MAF

although a faulty one "shouldnt" prevent your kick from going over 35

the MAF is the box above the intake/air box

The one Gen-Erix has won't work for you. The sport has the 1.8L in it, totally different than most. The MAF is in the intake. They are not cheap. A guy on ebay was parting out a Sport last week, he had about any part you may need. Here's some pics of my 97 4dr. Sport.

#1...most auto parts stores employees are clueless (especially when it comes to suzuki/geo vehicles).
#2...best bet is to find a used one.....the only new ones I found have been over $450.00....yeah, you read that right. :o

I fixed an oil leak on my 97 Sport , then pressure washed the whole engine . After that I had the same problem you had with my 1.8L . I figured out that I killed one of my four ignition coils , so I have one on order for 75.00 . The engine was running on three cyl.  , when I swapped the coil of the dead cly. two another cly. , that one stopped working. , so thats how I found the bad coil .  Maybe you have the same problem ?

Do a search on Google for MAF cleaning, its worth trying. Also check all the connections are good.

And, don't take the mechanic's word as gospel. Just like many parts places are clueless when it comes to Suzuki, so are a lot of mechanics. How did he determine it was the MAF? Can you duplicate what he did?

i am not the mechanical type, i just know the basics

i went to go get the car back from the mechanic because he wasnt doing anything helpdul. i drove it back home with the same issues mentioned before except the car would stay at different speeds, it wouldnt up or downshift. i took it to a local mechanic & he plugged in with a scanner & told me this was the faulty sensor. i took these when i got home.

<img src="http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i204/ecwrestler04/105_1121.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

he cleaned & it didnt do anything, he called around looking for one & couldnt find one either.

i drove it back home & worked just great. i still drive it around town, sometimes it behaves, sometimes it doesnt.

i havent been able to find one.

maybe somebody here could point me towards one or have one they would like to donate...?
 ;)

could i use a sensor from another car?
...which one(s)?

That looks like its just two NTC or PTC resistors rather than a conventional hot wire. Are there any markings on them? You should be able to test them with an ohm meter and a hairdryer.
