It's only legal for off-road only vehicles.

If this is for a road driven vehicle I would recommend getting a high-flow cat instead.

really depends on the state you are in, but I always remove the cats on my sammys... and trackers.. removed them on all 3 rigs over the years and its nice to have the extra power gain.

If a vehicle came with a cat, a cat needs to be on or they may fine you and if its a emissions state most likely you will fail the test unless you know some one that will pass you.

How to gut a cat is many ways but my favorite is if there's no bends to get in your way grab a small pole, pipe, metal broomstick, could maybe get away with a wooden one, and start slamming the pole in the cat to break up the honey comb ( like making butter back in the day lol )

the other way is take the cat and cut it in half with the org welds. remove everything and the exhaust pipe inlet and outlet then replace it with a pipe that goes all the way threw and weld the cat over that pipe.

this is how i did my 79 monte i had 3 inch exhaust i didn't feel like buying a hi flow cat so did what i told you but i ground the inlet and outlet till a 3 inch pipe would fit.

when you just gut the cat and don't fill it with a pipe you gain some hp and tq and a little louder exhaust but your still causing a disturbance in the flow of the exhaust so you still don't have all the power potential of this little easy mod

What abut throwing codes? Ive been told hollowing out your cat will send your ECM/computer into a daze and your check engine light will come on........is this true??

my suggestion.... cut it off, weld a straight pipe in, then sell your cat to the scrap yard, make a few bucks!

If you have an O2 sensor past the cat I wouldn't attempt this.

If you attempt this make sure you do not breath the dust from the part of the cat that you are breaking up, wear a mask that stuff is dangerous.

Or, you could do a cat-back exhaust (2-2 1/4") and get some power gains. Leave the cat, so that it helps the environment which is what it was designed for.

do a google search for 02simulator...should be able to find 1 to plug into your 02 oem 02 socket on the rig, i had to do this on my body dropped tacoma, because its a show truck...cant have the c.e.l. on, but for the tracker, i have a 95, which only has the pre-cat 02sensor...as soon as i hacked mine off and put the bigger 2 2/4 pipes on from the header back it started throwing the egr code on the cpu, but it only comes on for a second or so during the first 15 mins of driving, and i also had a couple other vehicles that ive put exhaust on and the egr code comes up... what the obd2 on my saturn turbo coupe said was egr flow insufficient....possibly from the higher exhaust flow?!? because the egr is controlled/monitored by the map sensor, so if it can breathe easier there may be issues within the computers "standard" which is pre-programed into it...

First is this a street only suzuki? If it is is it lowered? They probably won't check for one if it passes emissions.  Your gasmileage will drop about 1-2mpg with out the cat and your carbonmonoxide and hydrocarbon levels will rise so if those are low you will probably pass and if you pass they won't bother checking.
If it's a off road suzuki then it is easy for them to check the exhaust system because it is high off the ground.
Go when it is busy that way they are just trying to get people in and out and don't check for random crap, that and you can watch them to see how picky they are if they are picky just leave and go somewhere else.  The last time I went the guy was measuring my frame clearance my mud flaps fender flares even though you can easily see that they are covered all the way, what a dousche bag.
