Trackkick Need more POWER! What is your top speed?

I have a 96 1.6L 16V Tracker with 33' tires.  I love this truck, but I hate driving on the freeway.  My top speed on a flat road is about 72 mph in 4th.  I would really love to use 5th gear more often.   I've looked at engine swap options, but the 2 liter is a lot of work.  Has anyone had any success with bore/stroke kits? Do they even exist for this engine?  Is there an off-the-shelve turbo kit?

What is your configuration and top speed?

Somewhere well over 100mph; will have to try sometime with the soft-top removed, preferably delibrately..

'03 swb Tracker, 2.7L V6, automatic, 2.25" exhaust and high-flow catalytic aft of the stock y-pipe, 235-70 Firestone A/Ts.

The slushbox shifts lazily at WOT.  Would probably shave a bunch of 10ths off my 7.9 second 0-60 time if I could find a way to firm it up a bit.  I also have the larger injectors and throttle body from a 2.5 in a box ready to install sometime this spring.  I expect that to deliver a few more horses.

Stock 8V top speed was around 90mph on the flat. If you're running 33s on stock gearing it will be a dog.

95, 16V, stock, auto: can get well over 85 MPH!!(have witnesses) that is down hill with the wind on a dark night
normally though 75 on flat the auto robs A LOT of hp feels like to me.

my buddy has an 8v 5 speed with exh and clutch 2wd. He has pulled a car on a trailer 20 miles couldn't believe it. Lil retarted prob, but you do what ya gotta do.

Mine's a 1991.  5 speed manual.  It's a 4x4, has 30" A/T tires on it....and 163k miles...and I can still push the 90mph mark on the flat-ish.   Downhill I can bury the speedo.

A 2.0L swap is less work (and $$$) than a boar and stroke kit (which - no - doesn't exist). Your choices are:
* Intake / exhaust / cam upgrades (easiest & cheapest)
* Turbo (highest difficulty, and turbo engines don't last as long as N/A, but you get mad street cred)
* Engine swap (easiest & cheapest way to get significant & reliable power gains - but less street cred)
* Gearing upgrade: Move UP to a 35" tire, slap on a stock Samurai T-case (which will gear you for 35/37" tire). You can DIY, or buy one from Rockrat

I'm still waiting for someone to do a Buick 3800 Series II motor. That would be sweeeeeet.

So how much street cred for swapping engine with a turbo'd 6 or 8 cylinder?

I think that moves you to mad street cred. The V6 is pretty pimp itself (requires lots of l33t fab skillz). I'm going for a '57 Chevy service / tow rig, 4x4 conversion, V6 or 383 stroker on propane w/ remote mount turbo. Should put me into some kinda super stratosphere street cred. If I don't blow myself up first.

stock 90 kick, 8v 235/75r15's a/ts does about 150km/h (95mph) with 193,000 miles on the odo... it still runs good.

oh ya. with the top on (hardtop/conv) havent gotten it up that much with the top off yet (more wind noise then anything... is keeping me. plus its cold... :()

I forgot to mention the 22r(e) swaps (cheap / easy / strong / heavy), and diesel (expensive / elaborate / strong-as-hell / really heavy - but GOBS of bottom end torque & little need for diff re-gear).

I'm not sure what previous experience you've had with turbocharged engines, but a properly maintained WELL designed turbo engine running moderate/modest boost will not wear out any sooner than any other engine. Putting more mixture into the system does not stress any component of an engine any more than running it in low range, if fact much less stress is placed on things like connecting rods, crankshafts and pistons and other ricriprocating parts with a turbo than if you were beating the engine on the trail. The biggest problem with turbo related wear is improper design, too little or too much of anything, i.e. boost pressure, fueling, heat, detonation, ignition timing, cooling and lubrication etc. Anyone can slap a junkyard turbo on any engine and claim they've "turbocharged" it. The ones that work, and are Relaible and have longevity are the ones that are though out and tested. IF turbocharged engines wore out faster than NA motors, ( which is a pretty big generalzation to make) OEM's would not put long multi year warrentys on their products. Sabb, Volkswagen, Porsche, General Motors, Toyota, and Mercedes too name just a few, all produce and sell both turbocharged and supercharged engines that seem to be more than durable enough for everyday use. If you would like to continue this discussion about longevity and reliability we can start another thread? I've done a ton of research over the last few years regarding forced induction and have pages and pages, not to mention several good books on the subjest I can refer to for more data. It's all pretty fasinating stuff.
