I put a new exhaust on my samurai. I had a muffler shop do the work for me. They ran the pipe straight back. The pipe touches the gas tank. They told me to put some heat tape around the pipe the same stuff they use on motorcycles or put a piece of stainless between the tank and pipe like a heat shield. Just wandering what everyone thought about this.

The problem is they cut a hole for the tip to run through in my custom bumper so i would like to keep it there now if i can find a way.

I wouldn't ever pay someone to tell me to do the work I paid them to do. If I pay someone to make me a custom exhaust - I expect them to do just that. Not tell me to run along, source and install parts for their incomplete hack job.

I worked at a muffler shop for 4 years and my specialty was custom bending,  touching any part other than the hangers is unacceptable. Make them fix it.  I'd make'em fix your bumper too since it sounds like they screwed that up too!

Frankly I'd never let a moron that could be that stupid touch my car ever again. Take full pics of what they did, take it elsewhere have it fixed right & send the moron the bill with a letter that includes phrases like 'my lawyer said...' & tell him you'll sue. If he doesn't pay, sue him in small claims, seriously. Exhaust against GAS TANK!! O.M.G!!

Get your money back, or make them fix it. Something. Thats just not right.

1) Never lie in a letter you send in the mail regarding legal matters. It's a federal offense. Hard to prove that you didn't talk to a lawyer, but why risk it?
2) No need to say, "Lawyer said" - that can bite you in the butt too. It's not like, "My lawyer said" is a magicians phrase like "al a kazzam!" that will make things all-good. If you insist on taking this tactic anyway, "My legal council" woks better.
3) There's no reason to get combative right off the bat. It can unnecessarily complicate things, eliminate options, and once you've gone down that road, it will be difficult to change direction. it's If you give them a chance to fix the problem, and it does end up going to court, it will look much better for you that you gave them a chance. If you immediately pull both triggers, go elsewhere and just send off the bill with a nasty note, it makes you look like a litigious monkey's behind, and the courts will treat the case accordingly.

Well, ok maybe that was a bit of over-reaction. But he did say he talked to them & the guy told him to heat-tape or shield it. That was giving him the chance to correct it, & the guy blew him off. I really wouldn't allow that person to touch my vehicle again, who knows what he'd 'fix' next?

Their screw up is something to take into consideration. Threatening (and following up with if necessary) legal action is also something I'd advise. It's just not what I'd jump to right away. Unless they failed the "attitude test" right away.

I talked to the owner of the shop and got my money back. He explained to me that the co-op student did it and nobody checked it over before returning it to me. He wanted to fix it but I dont want them touching it anymore. So i will have to fix it myself. I' am going to try and move it away from the gas tank but i think i can only move it about 2-3 inches away.

Well, that's good to hear. At least you got your $ back. I just peeked at mine, which has been replaced but is in stock config., & its about 3" off the tank guard... so you should be good there. g/l with it.

What about a down pipe before the gas tank? and maybe shorten up the exhaust a little?
