i was thinking about doing the exact same thing, only cutting 1.5 inches off the top of the rod on the shock.

i don't see anyway that a shock breaking off could be dangerous.  one guy in our club broke both shocks off the frame(vary rusty truck) this spring and he just zip tied them back to the frame.  i saw that truck a month ago,  they are still zip tied to the frame.  shocks stop the axle from moving too fast or fight wheel hop.  they don't hold the rear axle into place.   but on the other hand, i cut the middle of my frame out and put it back in and i don't think its dangerous. ;D

Your correct term was "temporary"  I'd do the same "temporarily"
