Locker on 2WD Tracker
« on: March 26, 2009, 05:11:52 PM »
I have a 1998 2WD Tracker with 235/75-15 tires and I am thinking of installing a locker on the rear like a Lockright.   I do moderate offroading to get to kayak/ fishing spots and occasional fun in the mud but it is mainly a daily driver.  I would do more offroading if I was more confident with my offroad capabilities.  I have heard that some trucks like toyotas perform very well in 2WD with lockers.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

My main question is "How will it perform offroad and in mud being a 2WD?"

I would love a 4X4 Track/Kick but it isn't practical for me to spend that much $$ right now.

I just want to get better traction with what I have.

from what ive seen and read, a locker in the rear end is just as capable as an open diff 4wd. some places it excels more then the 4wd other times it wont do as well. it depends on the circumstances.

but to really answer the question, yes it will help. most guys with a rear locker dont go to 4wd as much because of it.

Thanks for the answers, guys.  I think,  I have my wife talked into letting me spend the $300 on it, since we just moved to a new house that is very close to a nice offroading spot.

For 300 you might be able to find all the parts to convert it over to 4WD. I hear it's not a difficult job.
