Tire Carrier VS Large Tire!!!
« on: March 28, 2009, 02:16:14 PM »
4 dr sidekick.
What is the largest size tire you would feel comfortable mounting on the spare carrier without seeing it overstressed?

The question I think is more what is the largest tire you can mount on a stock Tracker tire mount.  I had a 29" tire on mine and it was just rubbing the bumper.  I now have 31-10.50-15  tires so I modified the stock mount and I am still using the mount. I prefer the stock mount on the door over any other option I have seen. The tire mounted on a seperate mount supported by the steel bumpers can create rattles and is an extra pain it the butt to get to things inside the back door.

I am more interested in the stress factor. I got rid of my plastic, slotted the carrier, and so on.... The information I am looking for is how much weight (in terms of tire size) can the door/carrier withstand. I am looking at creating a suzuki to toyota adapter that will also lift the spare tire up a hair... I am going to run a skinnier spare but hoping to keep the height. If I have to I will go with a swing arm... just a few other important things on my list first... like steering...

I modified mine to clear a 31" Swamper. It has held up fine. the rest of the rear door is rusting away though.

i have a 31x10.5x15 on my stock carrier(2dr'89) and it seems just fine.
it doesn't touch those little bumper things, but doesn't seem to move at all(no noise).

I would guess the 4dr door and hinges would be able to handle more weight???

Actually, the rear doors on the 4 doors and the 2 door tintops are the same, so I would guess the hinges are too.

You are wise sir!!! Any time I think of 2 dr kicks, Convertible comes to mind... I forget about the tintops...

So, would I be able to mount a 255/85/16 without ripping my door off like what happens to sami's with too large of a tire on the back???

I would say YES. By the way a 255/85 is bigger than a 31", tire isn't it ?

I had a 31" with aluminum rim on mine I made it fit tight and made sure no bounce it was nice, but when I went to 33s I threw the spare inside.

Yeah, those swing away's are hard to figure out

I've had a 31x12.5 on mine for a while, I had to lower the air pressure to about 5psi to squeeze it on.

Was that on a 2 door soft top?

Hey Element, I wondered about this as well, I'm only runnin 30s now but down the road I want to updrade to 32 or 33s, and I don't want an extra carrier on the bumper.  I planning to weld some reinforcement to the door(inside or out havn't decided) and mount spare tire bracket to that.  Maybe reinforce/upgrade hinges.
