where is the temp sensor and the oil pressure sensor??
« on: April 16, 2009, 04:03:46 PM »
This is a dumb question but I want to do this once and do it right. My temp sensor is bad so I just bought the 3 gage set of volt, water temp, and oil pres. Where is the oil pressure sensor and where is the temp sensor  ??? The gages I got are not electrical. The guys at the auto parts store said the electrical ones are more problems so I opted for the mechanical ones. This is my 97 4dr. Sport with the 1.8L. I know most of you are thinking I'm retarded but I want to do this install right. Thanks.

Nevermind, found them both. Since the ODBII motor uses the existing temp sending unit I have to replace it anyway. I will have to find a place to TIG weld the extra mech. temp sending unit. Has anyone else done this or am I biting off more hassle than it is worth? The new gages are realy small and light up blue. I foung that the little tray under the radio is PERFECT to fit them in. I had to cut out the bottom but they will fit perfectly. Any advice may help.

The temperature gauge probably came with a bunch of adapters that screw into one another - you could weld one into the radiator header tank (if it's brass) - if not the pipe that runs from the radiator top hose to the back of the engine should be a useable place.

For the oil pressure gauge, make sure to use a T fitting so that you retain the existing oil pressure light - if your gauge came with a nylon line, discard it and get 1/8" copper line (do not use brass, it work hardens with the engine vibration and becomes brittle), the nylon lines slip in the ferrules and eventually leak.  On my Swift I installed the oil pressure and ampere meter from an Equus 1-1/2" set above the radio and had a leak at the gauge end that dripped oil into a CD/MP3 player and destroyed it.

FWIW - electric gauges are easier to install and just as reliable as the mechanical ones.

Thanks for the advice. I'll use the copper line and a tee fitting.

Too bad you already got the gages. Running oil lines into the cabin, even plumbed with copper line is still a chancy and sometimes problamatic install. The electrical oil pressure gage's ( at least Autometer ones ) use a remote sending unit that you run an oil line to ( preferabley braided ss ) and mount in the engine compartment. Then it's just one wire into the cab. NO chance of oil spewing about under the dash.

One more thing, the oil pressure sending unit threads in the block are of some metric pitch that I had a real hard time finding an adapter for. Maybe you could find an adpter at a ricer speed shop. I ended up just retapping the threads to 1/8 npt with a bottom tap. Made fitting everthing just a home depot or pep boys deal.

My first gauge install used nylon and I never had a problem, my last gave me no ends of trouble, and I discovered there are different qualities of 1/8 nylon line.

The one that leaked into my head unit was a relatively thick walled line that was supplied with the Equus gauge set.

|removethispart|@bentparts - I've yet to see an electrical gauge set in the small 1-1/2 inch style - which is the only size that can be neatly fitted into one of the DIN radio slots (50mm - 1.97 in high) - the next size up is 2-1/16 inch, followed by 2-5/8 inch.

If you do know of a manufacturer who makes electrical gauges in the 1-1/2" size, I'd love to hear about it - because I'm in the market for oil pressure & voltmeter.

The thread size is M10 x 1.0, I once made a temporary fitting from an old moped spark plug.

The fitting that came with the gages is the right size already  ;) I got the lights and voltmeter wired up already. The temp sensor and oil pressure will have to wait. I have to get a new step drill, I smoked my old one on my last project. I also will have to tig a bung on the water tube for the probe. The computer needs the old sensor to run but all will go well. I got the same gages as fordem. They seem to be pretty good and they fit perfect.

The computer uses a different sensor to the dash gauge.
