VW 1.8L 8v
« on: April 25, 2009, 08:39:30 AM »
Hello everyone,
haven't been in hear for ages because i was off at school far away from my zuki.
well this is my current stand point..
Suzuki SJ410, toyota axles, wrangler leaf springs, rotors and calipers front and rear, 33" procomp tires,
I am still waiting for driveshafts so my vehicle is immobilized and i already know 100% that the 1L engine in the SJ410 will die before it turns axles and wheels of my size...
I was just wondering because i have a newly acquired mk1 gti.. planning to do an engine swap in him, so i have a free 1.8L 8v engine... running perfectly and in good condition...

I have read people doing a 1.9vw diesel swap.... so maybe a 1.8L 8v wont be such a problem..?

what do you guys think about the idea? and what would i really need?

For moving the tires, it depends on what you are running for gears.  I have only run into issues once with not having enough power to throttle up hills while cleaning the tires.  And it was very wet and muddy out.  I'm running 33" ProComp Extreme MTRs, previously with RUF conversion and disks all around.

For gearing I use 5.12 into a hybrid rear and Samurai front along with a 6.5:1 in the transfer case.  It's a little underpowered for climbing hills with the tires aired down in 1st gear high, but I can usually climb hills in 2nd now that I have a carb that is working properly.  The 970cc 4 cyl. is a trooper and lets me rev it up all day without issues.  On the road I max out around 50ish pushing around 4K on the tach.

A different carb made a huge difference in the power available, feels like a new engine.  And the side-draft is nice for running at weird angles without worrying about stalling.

thank you drone for the help i will definitely look into my gearing and see what i can do with it and how much my budget will let me do... but i continued to search about the vw 1.8 fitment.. and everything says it will work perfectly... its practically the same as the TDIs that people are running... and if i do not want to pay for the expensive adapter kits, they say i can just use a vw fox transmission... and just  make it connect to the t case...

drone do you have upgraded axles on your SJ?

With the Detroit in the front I twisted up both my front axle splines pretty well.  I switched to an ARB up front and Calmini heavy duty axle shafts, but still run stock birfields.  I finally blew one up, but it took a whlie of beating on it pretty well.  The ability to leave the front end unlocked takes a lot of the load off of the birfields when driving around and allows me to unlock it when backing up, the true killer of front birfs and CV shafts.  I do have a set of the Trail Tough Chromo axles, just haven't installed them yet.

For the rear I am running stock Sammy shafts with a spool.  I finally broke a rear axle, about 5 minutes after breaking the front axle, and on the other side the spline was pretty twisted.  With a locker or ARB in the back you probably won't see nearly as much damage, as just driving around puts extra wear and tear on the rear axle shafts with the spool.  I'll pull them this winter to see how they are holding up with the new rear end before looking at replacing them with stronger units.

Once all is said and done though, if I was starting from scratch and wanted to build an SJ-410 on 33-35" tires I would probably go with Toyota to start with unless I had the Samurai parts laying around to swap to.  Since you need to swap axles anyway.
