Front Locked Trackick

Front Locked Trackick

Hey guys,
 I'm sure this has been covered before, but here I go.

   Since I'll be running the IFS on the trackick until the wife's memory goes or I finish the house. I have a Lock rite in the front of the vehicle, and no power steering.
  So far I've collapsed the front streering a couple of times, and since have done the Calmini streering truss and stabilizer. This has helped with breakage, but it's still nearly impossible to steer in 4 low.
  So besides the obvious of Power steering,  What's the best way to make the steering easier? Any Ideas or what you've done would be appreciated.

   Also I've found a 95' 4dr, 5 speed, lightly rolled, would the power steering bolt on to the 91' with the Auto and A/C? ???

first i would like to say that i am not a big fan of an automatic locker for the front. to many situations it causes problems that is why i took mine out. i hope to get an ARB soon.  

OK the only 2 fixes for a trackick to help with steering power steering and hydrolic. some companies make reduced ratio steering boxes but so far i have not found any for a kick they are all to big to fit in the space due to the extra gearing. i picked up a full power steering setup for my tracker from the junkyard for under $60. the power steering helps so much my wife drives on the trail sometimes and she is like 110lbs wet. i run 31s now i had 33's when she was driving.

Power steering will completely change, for the better, your steering situation. As for the '95 donor, I believe all the parts will work but the bracketry on the engine, if it's a 16-valve, will be different than your 8-valve. Probably still worth getting if it's cheap. Then you can buy the brackets from some where else, like Hawk or Trail Tough.

When you say 'collapsed the front steering' what do you mean? Actual bent drag links and center section or bent idler arms? If you're idler arm is bending :) I'd suggest reading this article for some advise.

Lift lots of weights ;D After driving mine for a while I learned to feather the throttle and/or rock the vehicle causing the front locker to lock and unlock making it easier to turn.

I drove like this for years and thought it was OK. But now that I have installed power steering, I wish I would of done it years ago.

I installed the sky idler arm it works great. I think it works better on road also. UTAH try and shift it into 2wd when making real tight turns if you can.

You could try the poor mans easy steering and take some of the pressure off of your front end by letting more air out of your front tires than your rear by as much as half,(i.e. 20lbs rear and 10 lbs front) give that a try it's free!

i think thats kinda like the old mud bog trick putting overdrive in the front end.  making the front tires smaller makes them turn fast.  could do the same thing with gears front and rear, 5.83s rear, 5.12's front, lots of broken parts everywhere! ;D

  The donor Trackick I can pick up for $500. It's got hood, windshield, and top damage but from what I can see that's it.  81 K on the drive train.

  With the front locker, once you went power steering did you break more often?  and Yeah it's the Idler Arm that collapsed.  As many Trackick drivers know, it's a pain to drive off a trail when you can only turn one direction.
  I saw the SKY idler Arm and I like ;D ;D.

By the way my biggest problems occure when I'm in the rocks. I've come off a trail before where the plams of my hands have been bleeding from trying to control were I'm going.

 The only bracketry difference that I've found between the 8v and the 16v is the upper A/C adjuster bracket will go on the 8v, but only the 16v one fits the 16v.

have you thought about fiddle brakes on the rear, pending what locker you have in there? as it wont work with auto lockers :-(

I dont know about lockers front-rear and rockcrawling ,but for mud-sand-or just difficult not wet terrain, the set up of a Detroit ez rear and 75% LSD in front works perfect.In sand and mud the rear locker gives constant movement and in case it starts digging ,the front LSD pulls the truck out at front easily.In not wet and difficult terrain,the rear locker mainly together with some help of the front LSD gives the best result.
I m fully satisfied of the current set up.
