Since you guys are always more knowledgable than the local mechanics, i figured I would consult you first. When ever I break hard from speeds greater than 40 miles per hour I get a real nasty hop in my tranny, or transfer case i am not sure. I don't know where to start. It feels almost like something is binding up. I am almost positive its not the breaks as i did them about 5k ago. And i 'm not sure if it matters but i am gonna check the rear drive shaft for slop to night. Please help me i gotta drive to Arkansa about a twelve hour drive in a tracker, in four dayss. Please respond with any helpful thoughts as to what it might be.

Sorry can't believe i forgot one of the most important details. It is a manual

This may be a stretch, but are you pushing the clutch in during hard braking? If your threshold braking (on verge of locking the tires up) your motor will lunge as the wheels lock and unlock because it pulls the rmp down quickly if the wheels lock up. It causes a jerking feeling in the tranny (kind of feels like when you take off in to high of a gear and almost stall the engine).

The only reason this poped into mind is a friend had a Civic that he thought had something wrong with it. and he was doing this while blasting his civic down back roads. He was actually locking the tires when breaking hard causing the motor to almost stall out.

Try it again and watch your tach and see if the rpm's bounce off zero when you get the feeling.

i maybe be wrong but, i had a similar problem. i found that my tcase level of fuild was low. Onces i filled it stoped. I'd check to make sure your fuilds are toped up. It may or may not be that but it doesn't hurt to check them any ways. hope this helps pierre

I am not breaking hard enough to even think about locking up the wheels. and i just checked the level of both the tranny and transfer case and the were very clean an full to spec. shoot some other ideas my way please. O hh yeah by the way should i be able to turn my rear drive shaft at all while it is in gear? Please help i must get this figured out by 8/14

Try taking a look at the rear trans mount,
if broken or damaged it might be letting
the trans hop around from engine torque
while braking

It will move a little while in gear, but you should not be able to turn it freely.

That was happening to me right around when my fuel filter got clogged with water. I changed it, filled up my Kick and then it stopped. Sometimes when I run my tank to empty, the 'hop' comes back, could it be a fuel system problem?

Did ya check your rear trans mount like Wild suggested?

To do this, you just gotta take a floor jack and jack up the back of the transmission to see if the mount has rotted away and isn't holding it down.

Where is the fuel filter located. I will jack up the rear of the tranny tonight.

fuel filter is a small canister about the size of 1/2 a pop bottle.  it is in front of the gas tank up under the car, passanger side.

If it's a sammy. The tcase might be the cultprit. My on first 87 the tcase gears would anti mesh becouse the bearings. It sounded like a jakebrake :-/. That would be my only guss becouse my track(decpite the sh*t i put it through) never gave me a problem.

Try this, remove your rear driveshaft, lube the splines in the input shaft to the transfer case. When the splines wear from movement, they tend to not slide smoothly and   to bind, this release abruptly causing a jerk sensation right under the vehicle.Lube with a quality, heavy grease.
